A very rare pair of porcelain vases decorated with Plum Pine and Bamboo by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Makuzu Gama Seika Shochikubai no Shuku-ga Kabin (Makuzu Kiln Plum Pine and Bamboo Celebratory Image Vases). Bamboo rise up majestically, the blossoming plum branches wrapping opposite each other, with baby pines growing on the back. All traditional symbols of celebration. The vases are roughly 25 cm (10 inches) tall each and in excellent condition, retaining their original rosewood stands. An inscription inside the lid states they were received from Hanzan (Kozan II) as a gift commemorating the wedding of Arishima Takeo in 1910 and held in the Arishima family collection.
The name Kozan was granted by Prince Yasui-no-Miya in 1851 in honor of the tea ware produced during the later Edo for the imperial Court by the tenth generation head of the Kyoto pottery family Miyagawa Chozo. The Kozan (Makuzu) kiln as we know it today was established in Yokohama in 1871 by the 11th generation head of the family where he reinvented the family business. He immediately set out on a journey which would propel the Kozan name to International Celebrity status, and send his wares throughout the globe. Pieces produced there were marked Kozan, or Makuzu, the official kiln name, or both. Although he had been running the daily operation since the late 19th century, the first son, Hanzan, succeeded as head of the kiln, in 1912, with the father officially retiring to spend more time on his own research and art. Kozan I dies in 1916. The kiln was run by Hanzan through the early Showa era, he officially taking the name Kozan II in 1917, after one year mourning for his fathers passing. Under Hanzan the kiln was commissioned for works to be presented to the Prince of Wales, the 25th wedding anniversary gift for the Taisho emperor and the Showa Emperors coronation gift. A very unusual vase by Teishitsu Gigei-In (Imperial Art Academy Member) Ito Tozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box showing decidedly Art Nouveau styling. It is 20 x 8 x 32 cm (8 x 3 x 12-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) began as a painter in the Maruyama school studying under Koizumi Togaku. In 1862 he became a pupil of Kameya Kyokutei, as well as studying under Takahashi Dohachi III and Kanzan Denshichi (who made the dishes for the imperial table). In 1867, with the fall of the Edo government, he opened his kiln in Eastern Kyoto. Much prized at home, he was also recognized abroad at the Amsterdam, Paris and Chicago World Expositions. With an emphasis on Awata and Asahi wares of Kyoto, he began to use the name Tozan around 1895. In 1917 he was named a member of the Imperial Art Academy, one of only five potters ever given that title, and like his teacher Denshichi, created the dishes from which the Imperial family would eat. He worked very closely with his adopted son, Ito Tozan II (1871-1937).

A stunning delicate cup made from a hollowed egg-shell. Inside is matte-black with patches of gold gilding, while outside the silhouettes of pines and a soaring Hototogisu (cuckoo) are deftly brushed with shiny black lacquer. The imagery instantly calls to mind Japanese poetry, which extols the song of the cuckoo, a harbinger of Spring and warmer weather. There is also something melancholy about the cuckoo call, as they are always deep in the forest, out of sight and alone. This is simply a phenomenal piece, and comes in an old custom-made wooden box dating from the Meiji period. It is It is 4.5 cm (just under 2 inches) tall and in perfect condition.

Two austere Bodhisattva play music and spread lotus petals before the benign countenance of Kannon while a fierce green God (god of thunder or wind) recoils, flame spouting from his mouth. This is a very unusual triptych enclosed in the original age darkened compartmentalized kiri wood box signed Urata Tenka titled Daiji Kannon no Zu (Image of the most merciful Kannon), Takahashi Koko Sho (Painted by Takahashi Koko). Urata Tenka was the first art-name (go) used by famed Meiji artist Takahashi Koko. The tension created by the movement and posture of the left figure juxtaposed against the serene silence of the celestial figures on the right is striking, with the central figure an island of calm and compassion in a tempestuous world. Pigment on silk in fine silk border with solid bone rollers. The scrolls are (Center) 96 x 223 cm (left & right) 52.5 x 222 (38 and 20-3/4 x 87-1/2 inches respectively). Overall they are in excellent condition, with toning of the silk typical of age. Beside the original Urata signature on the box has been added at a later date: By the deceased Takahashi Koko.
Takahashi Koko (1875-1912) was born the eldest son of Unkoku school painter Urata Chojiro (1846-1913)in Yamaga City Kumamoto Prefecture and was trained from an early age in the Unkoku style of his father as well as absorbing other styles. While working as a teacher in Kumamoto City at the age of 20 he met actress Takahashi Ko, who was visiting the area. Under the guidance of Takahashi, who was impressed by his artistic talent, he moved to Tokyo in 1890 and entered the painting school of Japanese-style painter Matsumoto Fuuko who honed his skills in historical genre painting. He exhibited with a number of different art organizations, and together with Yukihiko Yasuda and Shikō Imamura, he livened up the art world of the Meiji era. His ability was recognized by Okakura Tenshin, and was invited to the research institute in Izura. During this time, he exhibited at the Tatsugakai and Kojikai, and received many awards. In 1908, he was nominated as a judge by the chairman of the Kokuga Tamaseikai. In 1912 he was commissioned a work by the Minister of Korea Hanabusa Yoshitada, and visited Manchuria and Korea for research where he contracted scarlet fever. He died suddenly at the age of 37 after returning to Japan. A major figure in the art world, he left a solid mark on the Meiji painting stage. Work by him is held in the collection of the Sankei Kinenkan (Yokohama), Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art, Kumamoto Municipal Museum, Senoku Kokan Museum (Kyoto) and Adachi Kyodo Museum (Tokyo) among others.

A Raku style coil and pinch formed Chawan engraved with a poem by Otagaki Rengetsu enclosed in an old fine quality kiri-wood box annotated by a tea master in Showa 32 (1957), the bowl named Kiju (Gift of the Season). The bowl is hand made, not formed on a wheel, and we can see clearly that she is not a professionally trained potter. The poem engraved into the sides, wrapping entirely around the bowl, reads: Metsuurashiki hito no tame ni to agemaki ga sunadori ki tsuru mo fushitsukafuna followed by her signature and the age 80. Although a known celebratory poem by her I have never found an appropriate translation. It seems to bow slightly, in gratitude for some good fortune perhaps, as the poem suggests. The Chawan is 13 x 12 x 10 cm (roughly 5 inches diameter, 4 inches tall) and is in excellent condition.
Otagaki Rengetsu was born into a samurai family, she was adopted into the Otagaki family soon after birth, and served as a lady in waiting in Kameoka Castle in her formative years, where she received an education worthy of a Lady of means. Reputed to be incredibly beautiful, she was married and bore three children; however her husband and all children died before she was twenty. Remarried she bore another daughter, however that child too perished and her husband died while she was just 32. Inconsolable, she cut off her hair to join the nunnery at Chion-in Temple, where she renounced the world and received the name Rengetsu (Lotus Moon). However this was not the end, but only the beginning of a career as artist and poet which would propel her to the top of the 19th century Japan literati art world.

A black-tailed white crane braves tempestuous seas before the massive orb of a blood red rising sun in this sensational late Edo period Kano style scroll. From the right a sinewy tree loaded with exaggerated fruits hangs precariously from the green face of a sheer cliff, its wild branches running helter-skelter through the dark sphere. Mist retreats beyond the horizon, regrouping for another night. A very unorthodox scene, each wave scratched out with soft gray, foam flying from the bird and waking in troughs on the undulating surface of the sea. The powerful scene is bordered in tea green brocade patterned with vertical waves, and features massive ivory rollers. It is 2 feet (61 cm) wide, 76-1/2 inches (194.5 cm) long. There is some creasing in the heavy red paint of the sun, and although white underneath and not noticeable, there is loss to the thick gofun which originally covered the large peaches. These minor defects fail to mitigate the tyrannical presence of this extraordinary painting.

Ink on paper image of a skull befitting one of the most well known and outspoken Samurai/swordsmen of the 19th century, Yamaoka Tesshu, remounted in an olive grey border patterned with vines with wood rollers. The scroll measures 15 x 75 inches (37.5 x 190 cm) and is in fine condition but for some minor staining below the signature.
Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1889) was a student of military arts and famous calligrapher. Born into a samurai family, Tesshu began studying swordsmanship from a very young age. He took the name Yamaoka upon marrying the daughter of a spear school, continuing the family name in their place. An avid devotee to Zen training, he attained enlightenment at 45. A compatriot of the infamous Zen priest Nakahara Nantenbo, the two established a Zen training center together. He was a bodyguard and teacher to the young Meiji emperor, Zen teacher, poet, swordsman and artist, a giant of a man containing all of these personalities (or perhaps none?) He died of stomach cancer at the age of 54, his last poem reading Tightening my stomach against the pain, The cry of a morning crow…

A lovely hand formed bowl in the shape of an inverted mushroom with brush strokes (Kushi-me) defining the gills and the bulbous stipe laying like a handle to one side. A speckled yellow glaze (typical of Maiko) covers the sandy clay, with a drape of green and white seeping like milk from one side. It is roughly 21 cm (8 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, stamped on the base Mahiko (In traditional writing the character for Hi is interchangeable with the character for I as is Fu and U). It comes enclosed in an age blackened wooden box annotated by Yasuda Kenji. Inside the lid is written:
Maiko-yaki, Wafuken Saku (Made by Wafuken), Mattake kashiki (Mushroom shaped Sweets Dish) Created during the Tenpo era by Wafuken Takata Tsuchinosuke of Akashi Yamada Mura. Attested by: Yasuda Kenji , Head of the Osaka Toji Bunka Kenkyu Kai Ceramic Culture Research Group, and Governor of the Nihon Toji Kyokai National Ceramics Society.
It is said that Maiko yaki was begun in Yamada Mura Akashi-gun (modern day Hyogo prefecture) around 1790 by Kinugasa Sohei and was sold along the Maiko Beach, from where it derives its name. Upon the death of Sohei, the kiln passed to his son, but went out of business. Nearby in Oguradani Mikuni Kyuhachi opened a kiln around 1820, creating a characteristic iron speckled wood ash glaze (as seen on this piece). Takata Tsuchinosuke revived the kiln of Sohei in the Tenpo era (c. 1830) and was instrumental in carrying Maiko-yaki forward in the late Edo period. It slowly fell into disuse with the rise of industrial production from the Meiji to Taisho periods, and disappeared in the early 20th century.

A set of five Edo period Shino Mukozuke cups, two with gold repairs, enclosed in an age darkened custom wood box. Each cup is decorated with a spray of sasa bamboo in iron on the deeply crackled and colored filled feldspathic glaze. Gold repairs to two of the bowls are of superb quality, using genuine gold. Each is roughly 3 x 3 x 3-1/2 inches (8 x 8 x 9 cm). Inside the box lid is written Kurose-Ke (Property of Kurose family) written over an older inscription. It could be that these belonged to an entirely different person, or that the name was changed sometime after the death of the initial owner in the family to a general statement of family ownership, as the character Ke (family), much darker, obscures one character below. Planed off but still visible is _Katsu-Zo, Zo meaning “in the collection of” and the previous character Katsu is a common character in given names. Personally I believe the inscription originally read Kurose __katsu Zo.

A fabulous large Mingei Tokkuri from the Satsuma region in the shape of an eggplant, glazed in black with crystalline blue about the neck over iron rich glazed clay. Likely from the Hirasa kilns, one of the great Satsuma production centers on the southern Island of Kyushu, 18th to early 19th century. It is 24 cm (10 inches) tall and in overall excellent condition, enclosed in a kiri-wood collectors’ box.
The history of Satsuma ware goes back to the 16th century when Japan fought in the Imjin War, ( also known as the Porcelain War), in which Yoshihiro Shimazu, Lord of the Satsuma domain, brought back eighty Korean potters, giving birth to a new ceramic tradition on Japanese soil. There are four main historical lines of Satsuma ware: Tateno, Ryumonji, Naeshirogawa, Hirasa. They are roughly separated into white wares, black wares and porcelains. Kuro Satsuma (black ware) is made by using combinations of black or brown colored glaze. The body itself is dark brown since the clay contains iron from the local soil enriched by the volcanic ash of Sakurajima.

The golden orb shines out like the light of Buddhism from between the dark clouds on this exquisite 19th century image by Wada Gozan, priest of Jinko-in Temple. Ink and gold-pigment on silk in a patterned silk border with wood rollers in a period kiri-wood box titled Tsuki no ga Yokomono Ippuku (1 wide painting of moon) Wada Gozan koto (of Wada Gozan), annotated by Kuten. It is 25 x 48-1/2 inches (63.5 x 123.5 cm) and is in overall fine condition, with a minor wrinkle in the lower border. Wada Gozan (the art name of priest Gesshin 1800-1870) was a close associate of poet and artist Otagaki Rengetsu and they were known to collaborate on many occasions. She spent much of her final years in his temple Jinko-in.

An elephant with pagoda on its back forms this three-piece koro incense burner from the Kairakuen Feudal kiln of the Tokugawa family stamped on the belly with the Kairakuen seal. It is magnificently sculpted, standing 31 cm (12 inches) tall and in excellent condition. It comes in a wooden collector’s box. Inside the lid is a long verse detailing the origins of Kairakuen pottery written and attested to by important Meiji to Taisho period pottery legend Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan I.
The Kairakuen kiln was the "garden kiln" sponsored by the Kii branch of the Tokugawa house, in modern day Wakayama founded in 1819. It operated irregularly, drawing upon the services of potters from various Kyoto workshops including the 9th and 10th Omotesenkei Heads Ryoryosai (1775-1825) and Kyukosai (1818-1860), 10th Raku Master Raku Tanyu (1795-1854), and Eiraku Zengoro XI (Nishimura Hozen, 1795–1854) among others . Kairakuen products reflect a marked revival of interest in Chinese ceramics in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This vase, with its restrained shape and overall turquoise enamel glaze, follows Qing [Ch'ing] dynasty ceramic models. The design of the four-character mark, "Made at Kairakuen," imitates enamel four-character seals appearing on Qing [Ch'ing] imperial wares.

A one of a kind Edo period Buddhist censer of wood carved in the shape of a Baku, a mythical creature with the ability to eat nightmares, a brass basin inserted into the back. It is 23 x 16.5 x 27 cm (9 x 6-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches) and in fine condition. There is a strip of wood embedded in the form filling a crack in the wood.
The traditional Japanese nightmare-devouring baku originates in Chinese folklore and was familiar in Japan as early as the Muromachi period (14th–15th century). An early 17th-century Japanese manuscript, the Sankai Ibutsu, describes the baku as a shy, mythical chimera with the trunk and tusks of an elephant, the ears of a rhinoceros, the tail of a cow, the body of a bear and the paws of a tiger, which protected against pestilence and evil. Writing in the Meiji period, Lafcadio Hearn (1902) described a baku with very similar attributes that was also able to devour nightmares.

A powerful Kon-odoshi Go-Mai-Do Gusoku embellished throughout with matching crests of bound wheat. The helmet is a tetsuji raw iron 32 plate kabuto with brass piping surrounding the Mabizashi and fukigaeshi. The Bound-wheat mon is figured on the fukigaeshi and it features a five lame wide banded Shikoro. The mask is an unusual Saru-Men (monkey faced hanpo) also of raw iron with matching wide banded throat defense. Tapered Sode hand in five wide layers down the shoulder, the top bordered with leather and brass piping. The Do is a typical Hotoke-style Go-Mai-Do (smooth five piece chest plate) bordered in leather with crest in maki-e on the front as well as a small brass version on top of the front, and seven rows of wide Gessan protecting the waist. It retains the original leather liner. The crest is visible on all of the cloth and the upper portion of the sleeves and inner portion of the leggings feature thick gilded leather. The original papered rattan box is included, but due to severe damage, is enclosed in a later wooden case covered with paper. The tab on the back of the maedate is missing, and there are a number of chips on the Gessan and Sode typical of extended use. I believe judging by style this is an 18th century suit of armor refitted in the later Edo (with the wide banded Shikoro, Gessan, nodokake and sode) to meet changed battlefield conditions, making the armor both lighter for greater mobility, and more heavily defended against bullets.

A raw earthen bottle hand formed for sake and engraved with a poem by Otagaki Rengetsu. It is 5-1/4 inches (13.5 cm) tall and in fine condition. The poem reads:
Fuyubata no On the Daikon Leaves
Oone no kuki ni In a winter field
Shimo Sae Te Frost gleams
Asatode Samushi Going out in the morning I feel cold
Okazaki no sato Here in Okazaki village

An 18th-early 19th century Literati landscape featuring a scholars gathering in a forest of pines on one side, a pair of boats pulling up to a hermitage on the other. These are published in the book Jidai Byobu Shuei (pre-restoration, pages 76 and 77). They have been completely restored maintaining the original cloth border and are in superb condition. Each screen measures 70-1/2 x 150-1/2 inches (179 x 382 cm).
So Gessen (1741-1809) was an artist initially trained in Edo under Sakurai Sekkan, and later in Kyoto under Maruyama Okyo. A known associate of Yosa Buson, he was a prominent figure in the literati scene of that time. He lived a quiet life in his later years at Jakushoji Temple in Ise and his style was helped to shape the Literati style of the 19th century. The second stamp bears the temple name, Jakusho shuujin A similar composition is held in the Mie Prefectural Museum.

A radical image by the outlandish Doi Goga featuring a black devil and its child. The child reaches up to the monster, while the monster seems to be giving him a raspberry, his toungue flailing in the air. Ink on paper, it has been completely restored in beige cloth border with bone rollers reflecting the original mounting. The scroll is 42 x 181 cm (16-1/2 x 71-1/4 inches) ad is in excellent condition. Doi Goga (1818-1880) was a Confucian scholar of the late Edo to Meiji periods. He was born the son of a doctor serving the lords of Ise (modern Mie prefecture), home of the gods and Ise Shrine. A child prodigy, he studied under Ishikawa Chikugai and Saito Setsudo. The early death of his father saw him succeed the family head at the age of 12. He would serve later as a teacher in the official government school. He held strong opinions and was very critical of the hypocrisy and corruption he saw in military government and in Confucianism itself. His works began to see the light of day in the early Meiji period, however due to their inflammatory nature, much was left unpublished until after his death. Known for paintings of bamboo and landscapes, his Dojin figures are rare and highly sought.

Golden threads are woven into a home for the large three-dimensional spider crawling over the scrolling edge of this caramel-colored dish dating from the Meiji era. It comes enclosed in an age darkened wooden box titled Akahada Kashibachi (Akahada Sweets dish). It is roughly 16 x 18 cm (6 x 7 inches) and in excellent condition. The clay is consistent with the sandy texture of Akahada, however the color is quite unusual.
Akahada Pottery began in the Momoyama period (1573-1603). It is said that the younger brother of the lord of Koriyama Castle excavated clay suitable for pottery, high-quality red clay with lots of iron. He discovered it in Mt. Gojo (Akahada-yama), and opened a kiln there. It was one of favored kilns of the tea master Kobori Enshu (1579-1647). The kiln lost influence and declined in the mid 18th century. In 1785 the feudal lord in Koriyama castle in Nara requesked two potters named Inosuke and Jihei to revitalize the kilns. They established three noborigama climbing kilns in the environs of Koriyama with a central, eastern, and western kiln. The central kiln was run by Okuda Mokuhaku. The western kiln was run by the two potters Sobei and Shijiro. The kilns remained in production throughout the Edo period, but only the central kiln survived the Meiji period in operation, and it remains active today
