Exquisitely formed Hakuji pale porcelain defines this fine vase by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box bearing the Teishitsu Gigei-In stamp. Two simple bands match in width the diameter of the large rings suspended from simplified animal head handles. Fretwork in the lower belt provides the only overt decoration. The vase is 12 inches (31 cm) tall, roughly 6 inches (15 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Sozan (1852-1922) was born in Kutani country, present day Ishikawa prefecture, where he initially studied before moving to Tokyo in 1875. Over the next 25 years he would gravitate between Tokyo and Kanazawa, working at various kilns and research facilities. He again relocated, this time to Kyoto in 1900 to manage the Kinkozan Studio. His name became synonymous with celadon and refined porcelain and was named a Teishitsu Gigei-in (member of the Imperial Art Academy), one of the highest honors in Japan. He was succeeded by his adopted daughter upon his death. He is held in the Kyoto National Museum among many others.

Sculptured black pines rise from the misty forest floor, yellow sky fading beyond; a brilliant modernist rendition of this traditional theme by Yamauchi Issei (b. 1929). The entire scene is performed with colored paper, applied directly or wetted and applied as pulp. Fantastical shapes seem to dance across the two panel canvas. Gold strips applied in the upper branches are sunlight’s last rays reflecting off the needles, the yellow sky implicating late summer dusk. Saved from the harshness of day, the forest floor is cool, and gray waves seem to lap at the shore beyond. The screen features a rare shunkei-nuri red lacquer wooden frame, and is backed with handmade paper. It is 61 by 61 inches open (155 x 155 cm), and in fine condition. The paper artist Issei works from his studio in Aichi prefecture, his works have been presented at any number of exhibitions, both domestically and nationally, including the Nitten.

At first glance this appears to simply be a large image of a burning tree, however, look again and find the tree like figure is in the from of two entwined lovers, flames leaping from their impassioned bodies. This was likely made as an exhibition work, as it certainly would be difficult to fit into even a large Japanese home. The piece is signed Yoneda Mio, (Yoneda Mionosuke), and likely dates from the 1930s. The canvas measures 49 x 61-1/2 inches (124 x 156 cm) the frame 52-1/2 by 65 inches (133 x 165 cm). Overall the painting is in good condition, with minor abrasions typical of age, the frame has sustained a great deal of damage.

On the 9th day of the 6th month of 1775, 3 artists, Reisen Uno (Motoaki/Gensho, a songwriter, poet and calligrapher), Keiho Takada (Kano Chikuin, a Kano trained painter of budhist images and calligrapher) and the master of the Chikudo, Teiun held a songwriting party. This scroll is a recording of the scene, with the subsequent song written along the top, followed by a poem by Chikuin and Reisen, recorded by Teiun. This is a truly fine scroll, recently restored from its worn Edo mountings. It is set in a quiet olive brocade with dark wooden rollers and measures 27 1/2 by 77 inches. This is truly a phenomenal work in both scale and condition.

A Momoyama-early Edo period gold screen depicting a happy god of fortune drinking while being pulled by deer in his elaborate wagon through a rocky landscape. The paper is wrinkled and creased with age, and the color worn, exuding a great sense of antiquity. The bold patterns and rich texture of the Edo period brocade border amplifies that feeling. The screen is 22-1/2 x 56 inches (57 x 142 cm) and has a shaped lacquered wood frame retaining antique paper backing with some repairs.

A superb 19th century hanging moon Vase of caramel bronze gilded inside entrrely with gold and enclosed in a custom kiri-wood period box titled Kara-kin Gekkei Hanaire (gilded Chinese-Bronze Vase). In this case the word Chinese does not indicate it being manufactured in China, but using a mixture of bronze based on Chinese origins. It is quite large at 14 inches (36 cm) diameter and comes with the original chain and insert for hanging and display of flowers. Although I do see this shape often enough, this quality is rarely if ever found. The box is a bit worse for wear from the last century or more of use, but the piece inside is fine.

A water-worn bowl of natural wood lacquered inside with black and gilded, leaving black lacquer on the rim, to create a startling contrast between the mirror like black, shining gold and ancient weathered wood. It is enclosed in a period wooden box titled Jidai Kihachi Sunabachi (antique Wooden Sunabachi Bowl). It measures 34.5 x 30 x 11 cm (14 x 12 x 4 inches). There are two hairline cracks in the gold (see photos).

A stunning Suzuri bako covered in gold lacquer and minutely detailed with scenes of the 53 stations of the Tokaido. Mountains and ocean views, famous temples and castles are all populated by travelers in various shades and degrees of gold. It is decorated inside entirely with fronds over gold nashiji. A superb work of art that would have taken months or perhaps even years to complete. The box measures 33 x 25 x 14 cm (13 x 10 x 6 inches) and is in overall fine condition. There is a small repair to the lip inside the box (see close-up) and some abrasions beneath typical of use.
The Tôkaidô (The Eastern Sea Route) was the most heavily travelled road in old Japan, running along the eastern coast of the main Island of Honshu and connecting the cultural capitol of Kyoto with the Military and Governmental Capitol of Edo (Modern Tokyo). Along this road were 53 different stations which provided stables, food, and lodging for travelers. It was an immensely popular subject in various media of art, the most famous of which may be the woodblock print series designed by Hiroshige.

A dry ink on paper image of mushrooms growing up along a garden stone dated 1874 by Tani Nyoi (1822-1905). The scene is signed Nyoisanjin, and dated the second month of 1874 hemmed in by origami cranes on cream satin in a field of rough pale green silk and features dark rosewood rollers. The style is very much in the literati tradition predominant during the early Meiji. The dry vigorous strokes evoke a sense of fleeting solidity, as if wind were about to blow the light paper away. And certainly it must have felt that way for a scholar/artist born in the late Edo who had experienced the unrest and upheaval of the Meiji restoration and ensuing battles, and the sudden influx of technology from the West. The artist Tani Ryutaro also went by the name Tani Tetsujin, Hyakuren and Taiko. He was a ranking figure from the Ii fief of Hikone, but studied philosophy and the scholar arts throughout Japan. In 1870 he was involved in problems of state but was promoted the following year, and later appointed the rank of minister of the left, finaly receiving appointment of Seigo-I by imperial decree. He left his post in 1874, for a period of reflection during which time he lived a quite life in Kyoto. It was during this period he was called Nyoisanjin, and it is from the first year of this period that this scroll hails. It measures 33-3/4 x 48-1/2 inches (85.5 x 123.5 cm) and is in fine condition. There is no box however we could have one made if desired.

Four calligraphy works dating from the Edo period mounted on an antique two-panel Kama-byobu tearoom screen; the backing paper covered with minute gold flake. The centerpiece of the screen is a scene of Mt. Fuji next to the character Ryu (for Dragon). This piece is signed Ryukoubi (Soro Ryu 1714-1792) a well documented artist known for calligraphy and poetry who seemed to change names and addresses as often as humanly possible. The other three pieces are by a separate artist, one of which bears the artists stamp. Each character has been bordered in silver leaf, before being applied to the gold flecked backing. The screen measures 17-1/2 by 70 inches (45cm by 178cm) and dates to the early 20th century. It is typical for pieces and screens to be remounted periodically due to damage or age, or even simply fashion, as popular styles of border material and backing paper change. Due to typical wear, we have had the back paper of this screen replaced.

An ancient Japanese scroll featuring a blue eyed neko-tora (cat-tiger) prowling over a boulder peering out through sheets of pouring rain. This is a very unusual subject; I have never before seen a tiger depicted with blue eyes. Due to 250 years of isolation the Edo period Japanese artists had never seen real tigers and were forced to conjure up these feline images from their own imaginations. The painting has been remounted in green brocade embossed with vines, extended top and bottom in a soft brown. It is unsigned but bears two stamps and measures 24 by 74 inches (61 by 188cm). There is heavy creasing present.

An image of a boy hanging holly, directed by the shrouded figure of a kimono wrapped beauty seen through the doorway, fresh bottles of sake at her feet promising a night of entertainment. Excellent detail in pigment on silk bordered in fine patterned silk with bone rollers and enclosed in a wooden box. The scroll measures 21 x 75 inches (54 x 191 cm) and is in fine condition with a few minor age spots in the lower left edge of the painting. Senseki (b.1889, Kyoto), a prized pupil of the master Kikuchi Keigetsu and prominent figure in Human imagery in Kyoto painting circles.

A beautifully shaped miniature bell with simulated chord looping through the top, half lifting off to reveal a compartment for storing incense. A ball inside the lower section actually rattles around like a real suzu-bell. This is a very unusual and superbly crafted from from the Mino area of Edo Japan. The inside white clay is darkened with age, and the outside infused with color gathered with time. It is 1-1/4 inches (4 cm) diamater, 2 inches (5 cm) tall and in excellent condition, enclosed in an old wooden box.

An extremely fine bronze Koro in the form of a mythical Kirin by Living National Treasure Katori Masahiko (1899-1988). Masahiko, a graduate of Tokyo National University of Art, went on to an illustrious career. Unlike his colleagues, he produced very limited numbers of his pieces, often only one. As this piece is not numbered, I believe it also is a one of a kind. It has a rich, green patina that lends age to the work, actually most likely no more than 30 years old. It is 8 inches (20cm) long by 7 inches (18cm) tall. Price includes shipping.

An oil on canvas by Ono Sue titled “Inaka no Kyokai, Paris” or Rustic Church in Paris set into a double wood frame. The canvas is 15-1/2 x 18 inches (40 x 45 cm), the frame 24 x 27 inches (61 x 69 cm) and all is in excellent condition.
Ono Sue (1910-1985) was born in Niigata prefecture, and after serving as a school teacher for one year, moved to Kyoto in 1934 to pursue a career in oil painting under Yasui Sotaro. He began exhibiting with the Issuikai in 1938, garnering a number of awards there over the next 15 years starting with the Issui-kai Prize in 1943. In 1955 he would go on the first of his travels, returning in 1958, and in 1959 he would help to found the Kokusai Gushoha Kyokai. The next year would find him abroad again for an extended journey. He travelled extensively, documenting his travels in oil and canvas, Egypt, Mexico, Europe, South East Asia, all of these would become subjects for his method. In 1963 he returned to Japan. He was purchased by the Imperial Household Agency that same year. He would be honored with several exhibitions in major Japanese museums, including the Tokyo Central Museum, Umeda Museum of Modern Art, and his home of Niigata with the Niigata Art Museum. In 1982 he would receive the Geijutsu Sensho Award for the arts from the Minister of Cultural Affairs. Work by him is held in the Museum of Modern Art in Niigata, Museum of Modern Art in Toyama, Okawa Museum, Sakuma Municipal Museum of Modern Art and Kita-Kyushu Municipal Museum of Art among others.

A pair of six panel byobu by Abbot of Daitokuji, Priest Sohan Gempo (Murasakino Shoun) dating from the Meiji to Taisho period. The subject is an old song used to teach the basics of literacy as it is a panagram, containing every letter in the Japanese alphabet once; a popular subject for Zen artists for its simplicity and usefulness. The song itself seems to say, Keep it Simple, and the title I Ro Ha is used to mean basic. It can be translated according to Dr. Ryuichi Abe: Although its scent still lingers on the form of a flower has scattered away For whom will the glory of this world remain unchanged? Arriving today at the yonder side of the deep mountains of evanescent existence We shall never allow ourselves to drift away intoxicated, in the world of shallow dreams. Ink on paper, with a dark silk border and wooden frame. Some minor surface insect damage but overall presentable with a good sense of age. 67-1/2 x 143.5 inches (172 x 364 cm). Sohan Gempo, (1848-1922) was born into a Shinto family, however entered the Buddhist priesthood at the age of 12 at Kogen-ji, Kanazawa. After a brief period at Empukuji in Kyoto, he moved to Yokohama and received inka from Nakahara Nantenbo. It was in 1898 that he would be asked to take over the training facility at Empukuji. After a brief sojourn in China he came back to Japan and was appointed abbot of Daitokuji, one of Kyotos most important Zen temples, where he stayed until his death in 1922. An exquisite landscape circles the body of this voluminous ballister form by Eiraku Zengoro XV (Shozen) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 15 inches (38 cm) tall, 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Eiraku Shozen (1879-1932) was the backbone of the family tradition after the passing of his father in 1909, and worked tirelessly to maintain the family reputation. His works were preferred by the 12th generation head of Omote Senkei Seisai, and were also a favorite for use by the Prince Sadaaki of the imperial family in the Omiya Gosho palace.

A long bamboo incense case with dark wood lid carved exquisitely with blossoming lotus and calligraphy. The deteriorating leaves rise from the bottom, blossoms spreading their petals to the sun. Above three lines of calligraphy descend to meet like the squirreling rays of late summer light. The piece is 20-1/2 inches (51.5 cm) long and in perfect condition, enclosed in a cloth sack and kiri-wood box. It is signed (Japanese reading) Fusui(lotus water)Sanjin Koku (carved by Fusui, man of the mountain). The carving is one of the best I have seen.
