An exquisitely formed sometsuke porcelain by important Seto porcelain artist Kawamoto Rekitei (1894-1975) with raised patterns of grapes forming on the vine. The delicate shades of the steadily browning grape leaves is easily conveyed by the masters touch, each leaf carefully bordered in a raised border, the dark grapes slowly growing plump in the shadows. The vase is 9 inches (23 cm) tall, over 7 inches (18 cm) diameter. Rekitei was born in Aichi prefecture, home of Seto-yaki and a long standing important production center for Japanese Sometsuke porcelains. In 1914, at the very young age of 20, he received the top prize at then National Ceramics Exhibition (Tojiki Hin Hyou Kai and later (1922) received the gold prize at the Peace Exposition. His works were featured at the Paris, San Francisco and Chicago World Expositions. He was contracted by the Japanese government in 1948 to create a vase for presentation to President Truman, and his work graces the collection of the Imperial Household. In 1972 he was named an Important Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture (Ken Shitei Mukei Bunkazai).

Exquisite floral designs rise softly beneath the rich yellow glaze on this large porcelain vase by Seifu Yohei enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Crisp clarity defines the petaled blooms in slight relief blossoming on scrolling vines. A style both Seifu III and IV were well remembered for. It is signed simply on the base Seifu. The vase is 9 inches (23 cm) tall, the same diameter and in perfect condition. This is likely the work of the fourth generation Seifu, dating from the 1910s or 1920s. Seifu, unlike many potters of the time, was low production and tenacious in approach. The third generation head of the family (d. 1914) was honored as a member of the Imperial Art Academy (Teishitsu Gigei-In).

A large and elegant Wa-gumi basket by Yufu Shohaku signed on the base made up of alternating strips of finely braided bamboo rope and bands of raw bamboo. This is a dramatic work measuring 22 x 20 x 14 inches (56 x 50 x 35 cm).
Yufu Shohaku (b. 1941) is a second-generation bamboo artist from Beppu, the son of Yufu Chikuryu, putting him in the lineage of Sato Chikuyusai. Shohaku began making bamboo baskets in elementary school and achieved mastery by middle school. With his father, he created many styles of flower baskets that made Beppu famous. Today he is known for traditional Beppu rough-plaited baskets that blend plant roots and bamboo chunks. An independent artist, he is the leader of the local bamboo art association and the recipient of numerous prizes including Chairman’s Prize at All Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1985 and has been named a holder of intangible cultural skill (Dento Kogeishi). His works have been exhibited many times in the United States and England and he is held in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum and Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Museum.

Waves thrash about in a playful frenzy below the calm watchful eye of a full moon partly blanketed by dark clouds in this extraordinary painting signed Kagyo dating from the later 19th century. It is bordered in ivory colored brocade embellished with clouds extended in golden brown silk and features ivory rollers. The scroll is 21-1/2 by 79 inches 855 x 200 cm) and, aside from minor bands of yellowing of the silk expected of age, is in fine condition. It comes enclosed in a period wooden box.

A gentleman standing in courtly robes takes advantage of a warm spring night to get in some reading. Standing on the balcony he puts light to a hanging lantern, illuminating cherry blossoms wrapped in evenings misty veil beyond the rail. This is an excellent example of Meiji period Yamato-e signed Saiho which has been fully re-mounted in quality patterned brocade, and retaining the original bone rollers. The watercolor and pigment on silk scroll measures 18-1/4 by 76-1/2 inches (51.5 x 194 cm), and comes enclosed in a period kiri-wood box. The patterns in his kimono are produced using a stencil and gofun (powdered shell), and the straight lines of the sudare (reed curtains) partially obscuring the scene are a testament to the artists great skill. There are light scattered marks typical of age, but do not detract from this great work.

Golden eyes gaze at the full moon rising over dried autumn grass and wilted flowers on this fine scroll signed Shuso (Hotta Shuso). Pigment and light color on silk in a patterned silk mounting with bone rollers. The scroll measures 19 x 78 inches (47.5 x 192.5 cm) and is in overall fine condition.
Hotta Shuso (1894-1954) was born in Nagano prefecture and studied under Ikegami Shuho, settling in Tokyo. One of his best students, Shuso later became leader of Shuho's Denshindo atelier. He was displayed at the Teiten/Nitten National Exhibtions beginning in 1924. A specialist in images of animals and flowers, see item number 1111841 for another fox by Shuso.

Sennin, Daoist immortals, relax, Gamma with his three legged toad looking shocked upon his shoulder, Tekkai sending his spirit forth, the essential equipment of the Daoist life scattered about them. The painting is dated 1912 and signed Kodo. The artist has chosen a very humorous stance from which to depict his subjects. The silk image is mounted on a panel of applied gold flake and framed in striped Ebony,. The frame is 142 x 48 cm (58 x 19 inches). There are some minor abrasions to the surrounding gold paper. As the traditional Japanese home was made with earthen walls, which could not support weight, hengaku frames of this manner were made to be suspended from the edge of the ceiling, and supported over the transom (Kamui) which ran the entire way around a traditional Japanese room at door height.
According to the MIA, The Daoist immortals, Gama Sennin (Chin. Liu Hai) and Tekkai Sennin (Chin. Li Tieguai) “were often paired in Japanese and Chinese art because of their corresponding supernatural powers. Depicted on the right is Gama Sennin, known literally as the ‘toad hermit,’ a character based on the historical civil servant and alchemist Liu Hai of 10th century China. Various accounts associate Gama with a large, three-legged toad by which he can be identified. Gama was thought to be able to release his spirit from his body, metamorphose, and fly with the aid of his magical companion. Tekkai Sennin is the Japanese adaptation of one of the Eight Immortals (Baxian), an assemblage of Daoist and/or folk deities. He was thought to be capable of leaving his body, sometimes traveling for extended periods. On one occasion, he asked a disciple to watch over his body and instructed him to burn it if his spirit did not return in seven days. On the sixth day, however, the disciple’s mother died, so he burned his master’s body and went home. Returning on the seventh day, Tekkai’s spirit found his body gone, leaving him no choice but to adopt the corpse of an emaciated beggar that he found beside the road. Like Gama Sennin, he is associated with medicine, and is traditionally represented with a gourd that signifies his ability to transcend the body and to offer healing.”

A delicate image of a Zari-gani fresh water shrimp by Oishi Junkyo enclosed in a period wooden box. The poem reads:

naseba naratefu
kotono wa wo
Mune ni Kizamite
Ikite Kishiware.
Whatever happens, no matter the hardships and pain, Set it in your heart to live with Spirit! This little fellow looks up to the challenge, a stern look on his face and his dukes up, ready to battle giants. What a fitting image for this artist. Ink on silk in a fine brocade border with pottery rollers. It is 14 x 63 inches (36 x 160 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Junkyo’s life is a triumph over tragedy. Born into a low family, she was sent to a tea house where she became an apprentice Geisha. In a famous incident, the Tea House owner in a drunken rage murdered 5 of the Geisha, and cut off both of Junkyo’s arms. She survived. Becoming then a teller of stories and singer, she one day saw a bird feeding her young, and realized she could paint if she used her mouth to hold the brush. She enrolled into a studio, and became an accomplished painter in the Nihonga tradition. She then married and had two children, but later divorced, raising the two children alone. She became a nun, and opened a counseling/self-help center for the disabled. This was the war years, and the midst of Japans industrial revolution. Both mishaps in the machinations of industry and battle kept her half-way house filled with people in need. After the war she established a temple, and continued her philanthropic work.

Scratches of ink form a precipitous landscape of jagged mountains on the paper surface of this scroll performed by Fujii Tatsukichi enclosed in a wooden box titled: Painted by the elder Tatsu, One Scroll, Mountain, Annotated by Eichi. It is framed in a silk border terminating in black lacquered rollers. It is 13-1/2 x 59 inches (34 x 149 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Kato Eichi (1899-1987) was a potter from Seto who trained under Tatsukichi. Several pieces by him formerly in the collection of Tatsukichi are now held in the Aichi Prefectural Museum.
Fujii Tatsukichi (1881-1964) could be considered the father of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the modern concept of design as an art form in Japan, and most certainly an artist not to be defined by one medium. He was born in Hekinan city, Aichi prefecture near Nagoya. He was, along with Kishida Ryusei, Saito Yori and Takamura Kotaro, a founding member of Hyuzan-kai in 1912, the first organization in Japan dedicated to Expressionism in all forms through all mediums. He was one of the most important reformers of the traditional arts in Japan and a pioneer of the modern craft world. His creativity touched nearly every area: embroidery, dyeing, weaving, lacquer, pottery, papermaking, metalwork, woodwork, Painting, calligraphy, woodblock carving and printing. In the 1920s he wrote articles on home crafts for Fujin no Tomo, one of the most widely read women’s magazines of the day. He also held the first professorship of design at the Imperial Art School (mod. Musashino Art University), and his influence was enormous. The museum of contemporary art in Tatsukichi’s birth place, Hekinan, is named after him. In 1932 he established a studio in Obara, where he headed the movement to reinvent the Japanese craft paper industry. That studio (Mufuan) has been moved and is now used as a tea house by Seto City. A major retrospective on his life work travelled japan in 1996 spearheaded by the Tokyo National Museum, “Fuji Tatsukichi, Pioneer of Modern Crafts”.

A radical ink landscape by legendary artist Fukuda Kodojin. Ink on paper in a green silk patterned border set in beige with wood rollers. It is 13 x 70 inches (33 x 178 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Fukuda Kodojin (1865-1944) an eccentric self taught artist, his status as a poet, calligrapher and literati artist has reached legendary status. Born at a time of great change (4 years before the final fall of the Edo Government), he lived through the westernization of Meiji, Taisho Democracy, the rise of Imperialism and final defeat of the Showa eras. He was self taught, part of a small group of artists existing outside conventional circles in pre-war Japan. He moved to a village outside of Kyoto in 1901, where he supported himself and his family by privately tutoring those who wished to learn Chinese-style poetry. Kodojin was simply a scholar. His poetry, painting, and calligraphy all stem from a life-long cultivation of the mind. He was known to have taken the time just before his death to destroy the large portion of his own remaining work, leaving only that which must have met some personal criteria. Twenty five paintings by the artist formed a private exhibition (from Gitter-Yelen) at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2000, and he is part of the Hakutakuan collection among many others

A gorgeous female Bunraku doll with mobile head and hands in the original wooden box. She is 30 inches long from hemline to hair ornament. She has a very adult looking face and extremely ornate hair dress. The kimono is of silk with a shibori obi. This doll likely dates to the 1960s or early 1970s. A rare find for the collector of Bunraku items and Japanese dolls.

An ominous row of black crows in silhouette cry in unison from the stormy insides of this gassaku bowl made by Kiyomizu Rokubei IV and decorated by Kikuchi Hobun, enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Color has infused the glaze, evidence of age and use and lending to the malefic atmosphere. It is 20.5 cm (8 inches) diameter and in fine condition, stamped on the base Rokubei and signed on the side Hobun.
Kiyomizu Rokubei IV (1848-1920) was first born son of Rokubei III, and took over the family business in 1883 upon the death of his father. Not restricted to pottery, he studied painting with Shiokawa Bunrin and worked with many famous Kyoto painters. He also worked to promote Japanese pottery in the tumultuous Meiji period, when the capitol was moved to Tokyo, helping to establish the Yutoen Ceramics organization and Kamikai with Kamisaka Sekka. Held in many collections, a lantern by him stands in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum.
Kikuchi Hobun (1862-1918) was born into a family of Hyogu-shi (professional mounter of paper and paintings) in Osaka during the waning years of the Tokugawa government. He was adopted into the Kikuchi family and moved to Kyoto where he studied under Kanō Hōen, and later with the Shijo master Kōno Bairei along with Takeuchi Seihō, Taniguchi Kōkyō and Tsuji Kakō. He frequently exhibited at and was much lauded with the Bunten/Teiten National Exhibitions. He taught at the Kyoto Municipal School of Fine Arts and Crafts where his influence on following generations was much felt. Works by the artist are held in the V&A, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, National Museums of Modern Art, Tokyo and Kyoto and British Museum among others. Children gathering Sansai mountain vegetables, a stunning Taisho period silk painting by Nishikubo Kunko. Three young girls wear indigo dyed country kimono, their forearms and shins protected from the grass and brush and heads covered in white scarves, straw sandals on their feet. They carry voluminous bamboo baskets as they move along the reed covered water’s edge, perhaps in search of fuki (Butterbur). The scene is performed with heavy pigment on silk, in completely original condition. It retains the original backing paper upon which is an exhibition label bearing the character Miyako (the Kyo in Kyoto) in a circle. Each screen is 69-1/2 x 150-1/2 inches (382 x 176 cm) and in very fine condition. Nishikubo Kunko is known to have been a painter of bijin beauties, and exhibited at the first National Painting Exhibition among others.

A demure image of grace and youth; this is a fine full sized Bunraku theater puppet dating from the first half of the 20th century; one of two from a private collection we are currently offering. The eyes open and close, but are stiff, hands are flexible and fully operational. She wears a period red brocade kimono with kiku chrysanthemum patterns and a black obi featuring dragons and phoenix. A white silk lining and silver crown of flowers complete her outfit. The puppet dates from the first half of the 20th century, and stands roughly 40 inches (102 cm) tall. She is in excellent condition.

A lovely genuine full sized Bunraku theater puppet of a mature female character dressed in a blue silk kimono with elagent head dress. The doll is fully mobile, controlled from within by switches on her neck and poles extending from her arms. The hands are flexible as seen in the photos. She stands almost 4 feet (117 cm) tall, and comes complete with a bamboo display stand as pictured. All is in excellent condition, with a few stray hairs in her coiffure. This will be the first we have had the opportunity to offer online in quite sometime.

A horrifying image of a ghostly apparition accompanied by a Buddhist verse engraved into this long bamboo incense container by Ishii Matetsu. It is expertly crafted. The verse reads:
Katsu!
Dokusei Dokushi Dokko Dokurai
The literal translation sounds quite cold, but in Buddhist teaching it means: We enter the world alone; we depart it alone. Do not depend upon others for your happiness, rely upon yourself and live your life in your way to the fullest. It is 48 cm (19 inches) long and in excellent condition.

Birds chatter, perhaps excited by the promise of Spring from the plum blossoms peeking out of a bamboo grove, winters snow melts and trickles through the stones in the stream belwo. A two panel screen, ink and light color on gold by Mizuta Chikuho (1883-1958). An excellent example of this artists Nanga style, the subject and rich wet lines of the bamboo crisp and direct, fading to washes of gray in the shadows. The screen measures 68 x 68 inches (172 x 173 cm) and is in fine condition.
Mizuta Chikuho was an Osaka Nanga artist trained under Himejima Chikugai, a Nihon Nangain member often displayed at the Nitten and, in fact, bestowed with the honor of judge for the prestigious event in his later years. Works by the artist are held in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Kyoto Municipal Art Museum among many others.

A stunning Suzuri bako covered in gold lacquer and minutely detailed with scenes of the 53 stations of the Tokaido. Mountains and ocean views, famous temples and castles are all populated by travelers in various shades and degrees of gold. It is decorated inside entirely with fronds over gold nashiji. A superb work of art that would have taken months or perhaps even years to complete. The box measures 33 x 25 x 14 cm (13 x 10 x 6 inches) and is in overall fine condition. There is a small repair to the lip inside the box (see close-up) and some abrasions beneath typical of use.
The Tôkaidô (The Eastern Sea Route) was the most heavily travelled road in old Japan, running along the eastern coast of the main Island of Honshu and connecting the cultural capitol of Kyoto with the Military and Governmental Capitol of Edo (Modern Tokyo). Along this road were 53 different stations which provided stables, food, and lodging for travelers. It was an immensely popular subject in various media of art, the most famous of which may be the woodblock print series designed by Hiroshige.
