A set of five small porcelain tea cups made by Takahashi Dohachi with decoration design by famous literati artist Tomioka Tessai. Each cup is 5.5 cm diameter, 4 cm tall and all are in excellent condition. They come in an age darkened wooden box titled Dohachi Saku Sometsuke Sencha Chawan.
Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924) was a scholar artist trained from age seven in the traditional Confucian manner. After the death of his father he was apprenticed to a Shinto shrine, and later was forced to escape the capitol to Kyushu to avoid arrest for anti-governmental actions he had taken on part of the Imperial cause. Here he began serious study of Literati painting and furthered his scholarly research. Upon returning to Kyoto he was befriended by and moved to work under Otagaki Rengetsu, from whom he was heavily influenced. He helped to establish the Nihon Nanga-In and held a number of important positions, culminating in being appointed the official painter of the Emperor and a member of the Imperial Art Academy; the highest honor in Japanese Art circles. He is represented in innumerable important collections. He is held in the Tokyo National Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Kyoto, V&A etc…
The Dohachi Kiln was established in Awataguchi by a retainer of Kameyama fief, Takahashi Dohachi I around 1760, and the name Dohachi was brought to the forefront of porcelain and ceramic production by the second generation head of the family who attained an imperial following, and grew to be one of the most famous potters of the Later Edo period to come from Kyoto. Ninnami Dohachi (1783-1855) was born the second son of Takahashi Dohachi I. Following the early death of his older brother he succeeded the family name, opening a kiln in the Gojo-zaka area of Kyoto (at the foot of Kiyomizu temple) in 1814. Well known for research into and perfection of ancient Chinese and Korean forms long held in high esteem in Japan, and at the same time working to expand the family reputation within tea circles. Along with contemporaries Aoki Mokubei and Eiraku Hozen became well known as a master of porcelain as well as Kenzan and Ninsei ware. Over the following decades he would be called to Takamatsu, Satsuma, Kishu and other areas to consult and establish kilns for the Daimyo and Tokugawa families as well as Nishi-Honganji Temple. An exhibition was held at the Suntory Museum in 2014 centering on this artist, and he is also held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Kyoto National Museum among many, many others. The third generation (1811-1879) was known as Kachutei Dohachi and continued the work of his father, producing an abundance of Sencha tea ware and other porcelain forms, maintaining the highest of standards and ensuring the family place in the anals of Kyoto ceramics. The fifth generation took head of the family in 1897 and was one of the top rated potters of his time, heavily influencing following generation including one of his top students, Ito Tozan. The importance of the Dohachi workshop may be determined by the pair of vases held by the V&A (London) purchased in the 1870s under the orders: that they should 'make an historical collection of porcelain and pottery from the earliest period until the present time, to be formed in such a way as to give fully the history of the art.

A collection of six unique antique sake cups from various regions in Japan, each enclosed in an old wooden box.
1. A rice bale shaped Kosobe yaki bowl in thin bluish-white glaze stamped on the base, probably second or third generation (see below).
2. A Soma Yaki small bowl of pinched form with speckled green glaze from Fukushima. Soma Yaki has a four-hundred-year history.
3. A very rare Etchu Kosugi Yaki wangata cup in smooth blue green glaze with a hint of yellow at the rim.
4. Another very rare Garyuzan-yaki cup incised with white slip in basket style by Yokohagi Ikko (1850-1924) in a signed box.
5. A later Edo Korean style piece with gold repairs by Mizukoshi Yosobei bearing his five-sided seal impressed into the base (the kiln closed in 1860).
And last an anonymous celadon piece whose title I cannot read (appears to be Kyudai seiji).
The Kosobe kiln was established in Takatsuki, along the route between Osaka and Kyoto by Igarashi Shinbei sometime around 1790, The first generation (1750-1829) was known for Raku wares, Tea Utensils and Utsushi wares among more common household items. The second generation (Shinzo, 1791-1851) is remembered for Takatori, Karatsu, Korai and other continental styles. Shingoro, the third-generation head of the family (1833-1882) continued in that line, but secured a route to use Shigaraki clay and blended that with his local clays. He was known for Mishima and E-gorai styles. Into the Meiji period, the 4th generation head Yasojiro (1851-1918) saw the kiln close due to health problems of his successor Shinbei V, (Eitaro) in the late Meiji or early Taisho period.

A striking abstract work in red on silver over textured washi paper embedded with strands of tatami mat by revolutionary artist Hori Kosai signed ‘91 Hori. It is 13 x 23 cm (5 x 9 inches) mounted floating in a modern frame, pigments on hand-made Washi paper. Here is an opportunity to acquire an important abstract Japanese artist as yet entirely unexplored in the west.
Hori Kosai (b. 1947) is a contemporary artist and Lithographer from Toyama prefecture living in Tokyo. He entered the Tama University of Art in 1967, and in the same year with the assistance of his peers he staged the performance piece "Self-Burial Ceremony", with which his career as an artist was founded. In 1969 his work was accepted into the 9th National Modern Art Exhibition, and his career, unaffiliated with main-line art organizations, took off from there. He was very active in the Japanese student demonstrations of the late 1960s, from within which he became one of the founders, and subsequently leader, of a movement known as Bijutsuka Kyoto Kaigi (Artists Joint-Struggle Council) or "Bikyoto", which sought to interrogate the institutionalized nature of art fomenting activism and exchange between artists. He was expelled from the School before graduation as the leader of the group of radicals. The works of his early career tended to overlap with the activities of that movement, created as pieces questioning the foundations of art itself with the aim of breaking through the boundaries of modernist painting. He was chosen to represent Japan internationally twice, in Paris in 1977 and in Venice in 1984. His importance is expressed in his inclusion in the 1989 book “Print Works by 12 Artists” whch also featured Tabuchi Yasukazu, Kusama Yayoi, Lee U-Fan and Takamatsu Jiro among others. Works by him were featured in a retrospective exhibition on Japanese art from the 70s in Bologna Italy in 1992, and a traveling exhibition featuring his work (Japanese Art Today, USA, Denmark) in 1995. Since then he has been exhibited throughout Europe, Asia and America. An interesting note, he would become a professor at the school whch expelled him in 2002, and has since proven incredibly influential on a new generation of artists. His work is held in the collections of Tokyo Musuem of Modern Art, Ohara Museum, International Art Museum Osaka, Meguro Museum, Museum of Modern Art in Hiroshima, Museum of Modern Art in Kumamoto, as well as the Prefectural Museums of Tochigi, Toyama, Hyogo, Wakayama, Aichi, Kochi and Municipal Museums of Takamatsu, Takaoka, Iwaki, Chiba, Kurobe and Niigata among many others. An accordion album featuring calligraphy and paintings by various well known Zen priests of the first half of the 20th century. Including the opening there are 30 pages. The book is 22 x 31 cm and in overall fine condition. The opening pages are by Kutsu Deiryu (Izawa Kanshu 1895-1954, head priest of Kaiseiji), the famous protégé of Nakahara Nantenbo. A man-headed snake coils atop this incredible mid Edo period (18th century) image of Benzaiten (Saraswati) inside a mountain shaped reliquary of dark wood. Inside the gilded cave she sits on a gilded lotus base. The figure holds a variety of sacred implements in her 8 hands. Riding on the benevolent figures head is the snake seated behind a Torii-shaped Crown settled between two Buddhist jewels. The image is 8 inches (19.5 cm) tall, the mountain shaped receptacle 19 x 14 x 23 inches (48 x 35 x 58 cm). There are broken fingers on the right hand, and missing tama on the left hand lotus base, but overall it is in surprisingly good condition. Benzaiten is a Japanese Buddhist and Shinto Goddess from the Hindu goddess Saraswati, and has been worshiped in Japan since at least the 6th century. One of the central figures in the Sutra of Golden Light, she is the god of all that flows, including water, music and language. In Japan she has become the protector deity of the state, and therefore the Japanese people. In Shinto she is known as Ichikishima-hime, and in Tendai beliefs represents Ugaijin represented by a Shinto Torii and there (as in this figure) is known as Uga Benzaiten. This piece is from Shiga prefecture, home of one of the three great Benzai Shrines on Chikubu-shima Island in Lake Biwa.

The village headman aims his arrows at the moon to dispel the evil brought on by a solar eclipse, the village women in the background standing in prayer. This scene was painted by Higuchi Tomimaro for show at the Seikosha Exhibition held in Osaka in 1938. It is an excellent look into the world of the Ainu, a native culture to Northern Japan now lost to history. He has done a wonderful job conveying the texture of the clothing, and hidden behind the grayish background is textures of floral life, only visible by shadow, an interesting and unusual technique. Pigment on paper in a simple black lacquered wooden frame with elegant metal hardware. Each screen is 186 x 169.5 cm (73 x 67 inches). They have been completely remounted without any over-painting, and are ready for the next hundred years.
Higuchi Tomimaro (1898-1981) was born in Osaka and studied under Kitano Tsunetomi from around 1910. He began exhibiting with the Bunten National Exhibition in 1915, with his painting Tsuyasan, followed by works in 1917,18 and 19. He would then switch to the Inten, exhibiting there from 1923 to 1930. At this time, he began producing Hanga woodblock prints along with Takehisa Yumeji for the Senryu magazine. In 1925 he would be accepted into the Shotoku Taishi Exhibition. In the later 20s he fell into the circle of Nishiyama Suisho and switched to the Seikosha Salon as well as moving back to exhibiting with the reorganized Teiten National Exhibition. Much lauded in his lifetime, he is remembered for Bijin-ga images of beauties and genre scenes in his youth, and Buddhist imagery in his later years. Work is held in the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, the Osaka Nakanoshima Musuem among others.

Ame-yu graces the rough textured clay of this large Mingei platter from Aizu in the Northern reaches of Japan on the border between Fukushima and Yamagata. Often mistakenly identified as Tamba due to the similarity in the coloring of this particular glaze, the underlying granular white clay gives it away. About the rim is a ring of fire-colored tendrils trapped in a groove, an interesting added feature. It is 31.5 cm (12-1/2 inches) diameter and dates from the later 19th century. There are some old chips in the rim darkened with age, typical of use for a utilitarian piece like this, otherwise it is in fine condition.
The development of the Aizu Hongo pottery tradition dates back to the Sengoku period (1428-1573), when tiles were locally fired for the roof of Aizuwakamatsu castle. But it was during the Edo period when Lord of the Aizu clan Hoshina Masayuki oversaw the promote and patronize pottery production of what became Aizu Hongo Yaki ware, and it flourished under the supervision of the clan. This subsequently led to the making of everyday pieces of pottery for use by people at large by the closing years of the Shogunete. Fighting during the Meiji Restoration in 1868 and a devastating fire in the Taisho period (1912-1926) caused significant disruptions however; the industry recovered and is still thriving today. It has the distinction of being the oldest area where white porcelain is produced in the whole of northeastern Japan.

Perfectly formed characters eschew the virtues of the scholar life and way of tea through the Gyokusen Chaka (Song of Tea) decorating this masterpiece of calligraphy and design by Miura Chikusen enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Books have been written upon the subject of this poem centering on the experience of a Tang dynasty recluse reaching Daoist enlightenment through the drinking of seven cups of tea. The bowl is 17 cm (7 inches) diameter, 10 cm (4 inches) tall and in fine condition.
The Tang dynasty poet Lú Tóng, wrote " Thanks to Mèng Jiànyì for Sending New Tea." Which has come to be simply called The Tea Song (of Yuchuan). Much too long to offer fully here, I offer the first few lines (A full translation will be provided):
The sun already high in the sky,
An envoy wrapping on the door called me from sleep.
The imperial censor Meng had sent a letter,
wrapped in white silk with three seals.
Inside, it was as if I could see the face of Meng
In the 300 blocks of "round moon" tea…
Chikusen I (1854-1915) made a name for himself as a strict adherent to and supplier of Sencha tea wares in Kyoto; one of the most important artists in the country for that genre. He studied under Takahashi Dohachi from the age of 13, before establishing his own studio in 1883. He was a feature in the literati community of Kyoto and was well known also as a painter, poet and calligraphist. His porcelains were considered of the highest grade throughout the Meiji era, and are still highly collectable today. The kiln continues, currently under the management of the fifth generation.

A powerful Kon-odoshi Go-Mai-Do Gusoku embellished throughout with matching crests of bound wheat. The helmet is a tetsuji raw iron 32 plate kabuto with brass piping surrounding the Mabizashi and fukigaeshi. The Bound-wheat mon is figured on the fukigaeshi and it features a five lame wide banded Shikoro. The mask is an unusual Saru-Men (monkey faced hanpo) also of raw iron with matching wide banded throat defense. Tapered Sode hand in five wide layers down the shoulder, the top bordered with leather and brass piping. The Do is a typical Hotoke-style Go-Mai-Do (smooth five piece chest plate) bordered in leather with crest in maki-e on the front as well as a small brass version on top of the front, and seven rows of wide Gessan protecting the waist. It retains the original leather liner. The crest is visible on all of the cloth and the upper portion of the sleeves and inner portion of the leggings feature thick gilded leather. The original papered rattan box is included, but due to severe damage, is enclosed in a later wooden case covered with paper. The tab on the back of the maedate is missing, and there are a number of chips on the Gessan and Sode typical of extended use. I believe judging by style this is an 18th century suit of armor refitted in the later Edo (with the wide banded Shikoro, Gessan, nodokake and sode) to meet changed battlefield conditions, making the armor both lighter for greater mobility, and more heavily defended against bullets.

This is a superb Bunraku puppet of the historical figure Minamoto Yoshitsune, one of the lead characters from the Tale of the Heikei and legendary fighter in Japan. The doll is incredibly mobile. Head moving up and down, his eyes open and close and move left to right. His eyebrows can be raised and lowered, and mouth opened or closed, all from toggles inside his kimono on the extended neck piece. The puppet is in perfect condition and stands 43 inches to the top of his topknot, complete with a bamboo display stand as pictured. Called Ushiwakamaru as a youth, Yoshitsune was the orphaned son of an enemy of the victorious Taira. He was raised on Kurama Mountain by monks, where he learned swordsmanship from the Tengu (crow-demons). His status as a fighter was sealed when he defeated the great warrior Benkei on the Gojo Bridge as a young man without drawing his weapon. The puppet dates circa 1970, at the height of resurgence in interest in traditional Japanese Theater. It comes with a wooden tablet upon which is written the characters name, the back signed by the artisan who created this fine doll.

A massive tiger defensively nudges the female deity on this amazing 19th century silk Fukusa. Hand-painted and composed from patchwork patterns of lavish antique brocades and featuring glass eyes and metal teeth and claws sewn into the fabric of the creature. The piece is backed with red rinzu silk patterned with cranes and plum blossoms. It is 23-1/2 x 25-1/2 inches (59 x 64 cm) and is in fine condition. It comes wrapped around a pillow in a large kiri-wood box.

A large Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) cold-painted pot from an old Japanese scholar collection enclosed in an ancient kiri-wood storage box bearing a great many stamps inside the lid. The fine clay is covered in elaborate designs in red, white brown and orange pigment. The piece is 11 inches (28 cm) tall. There is minor damage to the rim but no repair or restoration; a fine example of Han Dynasty painted pottery in fine condition.

Exquisite repairs in overlapping gold wave designs on colored lacquer drape upon the rim of this 17th century chawan tea bowl. The white clay is covered with millet colored glaze upon which have been scrawled simple designs like the character for person (hito). The bowl is 10.5 x 10 x 6 cm (4-1/4 x 4 x 2-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, in a modern kiri-wood collectors’ box.

A blossoming plum rises majestically on the simulated matt-metal finish of this cloisonné vase by the Ando studio marked on the base. The interior is a rich dark blue, the exterior flat orange peel textured metal gray with the flower laden branches rising up in moriage. It is 30.5 cm (12 inches) tall, 18.5 cm (7 inches) diameter and in fine condition, enclosed in a wooden box.

A fabulous 17th century Koro (Momoyama to early Edo period) covered in black lacquer inlayed with minute mother of pearl shippo designs around circular windows featuring floral motifs. The lid is solid silver, pierced with overlapping floral designs. The windows feature grape, plum, bamboo and other seasonal imagery important in Asian cultures. It is 11 cm diameter and in overall excellent condition considering the age.

A set of 12 uniquely crafted masks of devils dating from the Meiji period enclosed in a period custom made kiri-wood box titled Kodai-men Hina-gata Juni-ko (12 miniature ancient masks). They are created from clay covered in gofun and mineral pigments with inset eyes of glass and ivory teeth and horns. Each mask is roughly 9 x 8 x 5 cm (3-1/2 x 3-1/4 x 2 inches). There are some minor losses to the coloration but otherwise all are in fine condition. The box has served its purpose well, protecting the collection from obvious ravages of time.

An Annan pottery tea bowl for use in the Japanese tea ceremony from the kilns of 15th-16th century Vietnam enclosed in an age-blackened kiri-wood box. The crackled pale glaze is decorated with a band of blue frets about the rim inside, a decidedly modern design of droplets descending in beads down the outside typical of early Vietnamese decoration. The remnants of a kinran gold infused cloth bag remain for wrapping the piece, the outside layer is in tatters, but the inside brocade is still supple. Named “Full Moon” (man-getsu) the inside of the box lid is endorsed by a tea master. It is 5 inches (13.5 cm) diameter. There are three kin-tsugi gold repairs about the rim. The 14th/15th century Ming ban on export of Chinese ceramics provided the opportunity for the Thai, Khmer and Vietnamese to capture a substantial portion of the Asian consumer market for pottery, and trade flourished between the Kingdoms of Vietnam and Japan. In fact according to research by Guy Faure and Laurent Schwab of the 10 officially licensed ports of trade during the time of Hideyoshi (late 1500s) seven were in present day Vietnam. This would lead to the establishment of vast trading towns and large numbers of Japanese in South East Asia until the Sakoku era when Japan closed itself to outside contact. Those Japanese still outside the country at the time were never able to return, and eventually blended with the native populations of their adopted countries. This piece has likely been preserved and prized as a Chawan, handed down from generation to generation for four centuries.
