Golden eyes gaze at the full moon rising over dried autumn grass and wilted flowers on this fine scroll signed Shuso (Hotta Shuso). Pigment and light color on silk in a patterned silk mounting with bone rollers. The scroll measures 19 x 78 inches (47.5 x 192.5 cm) and is in overall fine condition.
Hotta Shuso (1894-1954) was born in Nagano prefecture and studied under Ikegami Shuho, settling in Tokyo. One of his best students, Shuso later became leader of Shuho's Denshindo atelier. He was displayed at the Teiten/Nitten National Exhibtions beginning in 1924. A specialist in images of animals and flowers, see item number 1111841 for another fox by Shuso.

A lacquered wooden box decorated in built up Takamaki-e with Tsuba and Kozuka by Heian Zohiko dating from the first half of the 20th century. Inside is fine even nashiji. The decorations rise quite high off the surface, almost as if genuine tsuba were lying atop the box. One tsuba is in the shape of a Mokugyo, a Buddhist prayer drum of hollowed wood culminating in two dragons. The second is one of the seven lucky gods (shichi-fukujin) Daikoku seated in front of a rice bale, smoking a pipe and petting a puppy. The Kozuka handle is decorated with a traditional entertainer dancing with an umbrella. All the edges are protected by a silver rim. The Zohiko stamp is visible on the underside of the box; an elephant in a cartouche. The box measures 11 x 8-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches (28 x 22 x 12 cm) and is in excellent condition. Zohiko is one of the oldest and most prominent lacquer studios in Kyoto. This was likely produced under the visage of Zohiko VII or VIII.

A large Kiji porcelain vase with florals (stylized millet?) in raised relief by Miyanaga Tozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The architecture and infinite care shown in the carving on the surface proves this to be a superb piece deserving of the name of one of Kyotos top porcelain artists. The vase is 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) tall, 11-1/2 inches (30 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Miyanaga Tozan I (1868-1941) is one of the most important names in Kyoto ceramics. He was born in Ishikawa prefecture, and graduated from the (now) Tokyo University of Art. While a government employee, he represented Japan at Arts Expositions, and studied art in Europe before returning to Japan in 1902 to devote himself to the production of ceramics, with great emphasis on celadon, one of the most difficult of all ceramic wares. He was direct teacher or mentor to a number of prominent artists including Kitaoji Rosanjin and Arakawa Toyozo. He was succeeded by his adopted daughter who brought a refreshing variation of color and delicate touch to the porcelains they produced. The kiln is now in the third generation, run by his grandson.

A bronze vase of mountainous form by Nakajima Yasumi I patinated in his signature mottled red-brown and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall, 8 inches (20.5 cm wide and in excellent condition. Nakajima Toyoji, (d. 1950) first came to notice in 1908, receiving an award at the Senkatsu Kinen Exhibition. He was a consistent exhibitor with the Teiten-Nitten national exhibitions, He was also quite active abroad, being prized at the 1931 Belgian Exposition and serving as juror for the Japanese submissions to the Paris Exposition in 1925 and was subsequently prized there. His work is held in the collection of the Imperial Household Agency and he served as mentor to a generation of young bronze artists.

An unusual image of a towering stone among pines by Yasuda Hanpo enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1935. It is titled Sosui Manken (In the shade of Towering Trees. Light pigment and ink on paper in a cloud-patterned satin border with large bone rollers. 46.5 x 207 cm (18-1/2 x 82 inches) and is in exceptional condition.
Yasuda Hanpo (1889-1947) was a Nanga artist studied under Mizuta Chikuho and Himejima Chikugai. He was first accepted into the Bunten in Taisho 6 (1918) and was steadily accepted throughout his life. From 1922 he also participated in the Nihon Nanga-In Exhibition. Held in the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo among others.

A turned kiri-wood kogo incense case decorated with painting of plums and camellia with a silver rim. Inside wide leaves in god outline underlie the artist’s signature and stamp. The piece is 4-1/2 inches (11.5 cm) diameter.
Sekka (1866-1942) is known as the last great Rimpa Master, an artist of many talents who worked in painting, wood and lacquer. Taken from Wikipedia (they say it so much better than I) In 1910, Sekka was sent to Glascow to study Western art and craftsmanship. He sought to learn more about the Western attraction to Japonisme and which elements or facets of Japanese art would be more attractive to the West. Returning to Japan, he taught at the newly opened Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, experimented with Western tastes, styles, and methods, and incorporated them into his otherwise traditional Japanese-style works. It is easy to see this juxtaposition by looking at almost any of his paintings. While he sticks to traditional Japanese subject matter, and some elements of Rimpa painting, the overall effect is very Western and modern. He uses bright colors in large swaths, his images seeming on the verge of being patterns rather than proper pictures of a subject; the colors and patterns seem almost to 'pop', giving the paintings an almost three-dimensional quality.

A superbly rendered image of a golden-eyed monkey with prehensile tail curling upward in a fine mounting of golden striped brocade by Ota Issai. The scroll is 34 x 59 inches (86 x 150 cm) and is in excellent condition, completely remounted using quality materials without overpainting. Ota Issai (1892-1979) was born in Nishio city, Aichi prefecture near modern day Nagoya. He graduated the Kyoto E-ga Senmon Gakko (future Kyoto U of A) where he studied under Kawai Gyokudo, specializing in animal imagery.

Nita A ring of skulls playfully sojourn on the front of this rather unusual deep Edo Karatsu Chawan. On back another pair tumble helplessly over the thick speckled glaze. The base is bare earth, dark and shiny with age and handling. The skulls are not just resist painted on, but are actually incised, the eyes and nostrils set deep into the southern clay. The bowl is 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm) tall, roughly 4 inches (10.5 cm) diameter and is in excellent condition, enclosed in a wooden box.

An unusual Meiji period bronze image of the jolly Daikoku-ten, one of the 7 gods of fortune, looking incredibly relaxed and content. His hat is removable to reveal a chamber for burning incense, and the smoke would be exhaled though his open mouth. It is 6-1/2 x 8 x 5-1/2 inches 16.5 x 20 x 14 cm) and is in overall fine, original condition. The artist chop is in a raised cartouche on the base and appears to read Yoshioka Minpo.

A lacquered and iron bound round lidded box called a kubi-oke made to carry the head of a man taken in battle or that of a man after committing ritual suicide for offering to the lord. It is 13 inches (33 cm) diameter, 11-1/2 inches (29 cm) tall with large handles from which it could be carried on a pole. There is mouse damage on one part of the bottom, but has not eaten through to the inside.

A beautiful Meiji period basin of light weight metal gilded with genuine gold leaf with each individual petal rising to form the fluted rim. Much worn from handling, the bowl measures 25 cm (10 inches) diameter and is 12 cm (5 inches) tall.

Something I have never seen before, a set of pillows for one couple from Shimabara, one of the oldest pleasure districts of Kyoto, enclosed in the original Kiri-wood storage box. The man’s pillow is a simple roundel of soft leather. The woman’s, made for a geisha and her elaborate coiffure, is a small tapering black lacquered box with a drawer for a hair pin, to the top of which is secured a brocade pillow with a silk chord. The box itself is a work of art, with copper handles on the sides, and an inlaid tab in the sliding lid made of ebony. The pillows are housed within on a sliding stand. The prestige placed upon these specific pillows shows them to be much more than ordinary. actually ceremonial. The box is 50.5 x 27.5 x 25.5 cm (20 x 11 x 10 inches). The man’s pillow is 14 cm (5-1/2 inches) diameter, the woman’s 21.5 x 11 x 18 cm (8-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 7 inches). They are in an excellent state of preservation.

A very fine early 20th century screen hand-painted simply and exquisitely with the mixing branches of a blossoming cherry and both fresh green and red maple. The painstaking detail in each individual leaf and flower is breathtaking. The awesome scene is triple bordered inside a frame of green brocade, red and black silk and gold. We have had the screen re-backed with original style forest green paper and replaced the black wooden frame. It measures 31-1/2 by 66-1/2 inches (80 by 169 cm).

A delicate image of a Zari-gani fresh water shrimp by Oishi Junkyo enclosed in a period wooden box. The poem reads:
nanigotomo
naseba naratefu
kotono wa wo
Mune ni Kizamite
Ikite Kishiware.
Whatever happens, no matter the hardships and pain, Set it in your heart to live with Spirit! This little fellow looks up to the challenge, a stern look on his face and his dukes up, ready to battle giants. What a fitting image for this artist. Ink on silk in a fine brocade border with pottery rollers. It is 14 x 63 inches (36 x 160 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Junkyo’s life is a triumph over tragedy. Born into a low family, she was sent to a tea house where she became an apprentice Geisha. In a famous incident, the Tea House owner in a drunken rage murdered 5 of the Geisha, and cut off both of Junkyo’s arms. She survived. Becoming then a teller of stories and singer, she one day saw a bird feeding her young, and realized she could paint if she used her mouth to hold the brush. She enrolled into a studio, and became an accomplished painter in the Nihonga tradition. She then married and had two children, but later divorced, raising the two children alone. She became a nun, and opened a counseling/self-help center for the disabled. This was the war years, and the midst of Japans industrial revolution. Both mishaps in the machinations of industry and battle kept her half-way house filled with people in need. After the war she established a temple, and continued her philanthropic work.

A very unusual Kutani vase showing strong Art Deco influence, signed on the base and likely dating from the revival of that style seen in the 1950s. The white porcelain ground is decorated with four stylized tree trunks in overglaze enamels of white, black and various browns, with scattered gold flake between. The vase is 10 inches (25 cm) tall, 5 inches (12 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Truly a rare find!

Flames of red flash form the bird resurrected on the side of this large Cloisonne vase by the Ando company of Nagoya; Japan’s premier cloisonne studio. The color is hard to describe, seeming to be lit from within. A combination of wire and wireless design using gold wire with silver rim. Ando mark on base, the vase measures 37 cm (14-1/2 inches) tall, 32 cm (12-1/2 inches) diameter and is in excellent condition. It comes enclosed in a fine, custom made kiri-wood box.

Four kiri panels are set into a rosewood framework, each uniquely painted by Osaka Literati paragon Mori Kinseki. It is 12 x 12 x 11-1/2 inches (30 x 30 x 29 cm) and is in fine condition. The brass insert too, looks almost unused. Included is a small folding fan in the original box by the artist as well. Mori Kinseki (1843-1921) was born the third son in a family of Inn owners in the hotsprings town of Arima, Hyogo prefecture, in 1843. At the age of three he was sent away to be raised by an inn owner in Osaka, Mori Ihei. By the age of 19 he was studying painting under Kanae Kinjo, and joined the circle of poets and scholars around Mega Yusho. After the opening of Japan with the fall of the Edo government, he traveled to Tokyo, where he studied western style perspective under Takahashi Koichi, and shortly thereafter the name of Mori Kinseki begins to appear in art annals, initially as a bronze plate lithographer (in 1881 one of his lithographs was exhibited at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exhibition), and became associated with the Seikoku Bunjin group of literati artists. His bronze plate work was well known, and he illustrated more than 100 books, becoming the leading artist in that field in Kansai. At the age of 40, in 1883, he helps to found the Nihon Nanga-kai organization of literati painters, and the following year takes up a professorship at the new Naniwa School of Painting in Osaka. In 1890 he is named a designated artist to the Imperial Household Agency (and in 1913 would be named a member of the Imperial Art Academy or Teishitsu Gige-In). His works were not just submitted to many of the National Exhibitions of the Meiji and Taisho eras, but he he was in fact made a judge at many of these affairs.
