A set of scholars desk items, including a Chinese Qing dynasty crystal brush rest in the form of two mountains, Chinese crystal stamp carved with four characters between dragons, and an unusual obelisk written with the Nichiren Buddhist epitaph Na-mu Myoho-ren-ge-kyo in radical script over textured surface, glass or crystal. We have been unable to find a single inclusion in the obelisk, making it either a perfect crystal, suiting a religious object, or glass. The stamp is four immaculately cut characters between two scrollwork dragons (I am not versed in Chinese, but the Japanese reading seems to be Min Zan Chu In). The obelisk is 3 inches tall, the stamp 1-3/4 inches (4 cm) tall and the brush rest roughly 2-1/2 inches (6 cm) long. All pieces are in perfect condition.

A very elegant pair of Antique Andon lamps dating from the Meiji period in the original storage box from a Kyoto estate. The box is dated Meiji 36 (1904) and stylistically these fit perfectly into that era, with a fine transparent red lacquer finish. They are in excellent condition, each standing 31 inches (79 cm) tall, 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) square. Due to size these will require special shipping consideration, the cost to be accrued separately.

There is incredible detail in all aspects of this huge bronze sculpture of a jacketed monkey and his elder handler resting on a bronze base signed Shojun (also read Katsunori), dating from the mid 20th century (1935-1965). Taking a break between performances, the aged man pulls out his pipe and tobacco pouch, his wizened countenance seeming as if speaking some soothing words to the creature, perhaps otsukare-sama. A chain runs from his wrist to a collar around the animals neck. It is signed on the back of the elder figure in a silver tablet. The massive display weighs 29 pounds (13.5 kg) and stands 14 inches (34 cm) tall, 15 inches (39 cm) across the base. Monkey handlers have been popular entertainers for centuries in Japan, and in fact I saw a pair performing in a park in Yamaguchi prefecture just two years ago. A superb piece of bronze! A typical Muromachi style Sansui screen showing scholarly travelers in a ragged landscape of precipitous hills and temples dusted with clouds of gold flake likely dating from the late 16th century. It is bordered in fine antique patterned brocade with a black lacquered frame. The gold mist engulfs the scene, giving life to the unusually large figures, a Muromachi-Momoyama trait. In the area about the travelers’ path, gold has been rubbed into the paper, giving it a soft sheen. The screen measures 64-1/2 x 142 inches (164 x 361 cm) and is Completely Restored.

A large vase by Takahashi Dohachi and decorated by Hashimoto Dokuzan enclosed in the original wooden box signed by both artists. Also, stored in a separate compartment is a wooden stand which appears to have once been part of a temple or altar. The vase is covered in a typical crackled Kyo-yaki glaze, and decorated in cobalt with two figures in a watery landscape, one fishing, the other on top of a stone playing the flute. Judging by the style it is likely an allusion to the famous friends Kanzan and Jitoku. The vase is 12 inches (31 cm) tall, 9 inches (23 cm) diameter and in fine condition.
Hashimoto Dokuzan (Gengi, 1869-1938) was born in Nigata, and was sent to Kyoto at the age of 16 to study painting and philosophy under Tomioka Tessai. At the age of 20 he entered Tenryuji under Gazan. He received Inka from Ryuen. In 1910 he moved to Shokokuji, and then was assigned the foundation of Nanonji Temple in Tottori Prefecture. He served as abbot of Tenryuji Temple and Shokokuji, both important Zen temples in Kyoto.
The Dohachi Kiln was established in Awataguchi by the retainer of Kameyama fief, Dohachi I around 1760, and the name Dohachi was brought to the forefront of porcelain by the second generation head of the family who attained an imperial following, and grew to be one of the most famous potters of the Later Edo period to come from Kyoto. He moved the kiln to the Gojo-zaka area (at the foot of Kiyomizu temple) in 1814 And was well known for research into and perfection of ancient Chinese and Korean forms long held in high esteem in Japan, and at the same time worked to expand the family reputation within tea circles.

A gold tree laden with peaches accompanied by a poem drapes over the sides of this large porcelain bowl made by Miura Chikusen and decorated by Hashimoto Kansetsu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) diameter, 3-3/4 inches (9.5 cm) tall and in fine condition.
Born into the family of literatus and painter Hashimoto Kaikan in Hyogo, in the heart of central Japan, Hashimoto Kansetsu (1883-1945) was a sinophile and manic painter trained initially by his own eye and studies of Chinese classics, then under Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942). Very opinionated (like his teacher) on the future of Japanese painting, he eventually left Seiho’s Chikujokai school and set out to establish his own painting style which came to be called Shin-Nanga (the New Southern School). He traveled in Europe and extensively in China, and many of his scenes are inspired by that country. His former residence, which he designed entirely himself, is now a museum. Works by this artist are in so many important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MOMAT (Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art), Adachi Museum, Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, and the Imperial Household collection among many others.
Chikusen I (1854-1915) made a name for himself as a strict adherent to and supplier of Sencha tea wares in Kyoto; one of the most important artists in the country for that genre. He studied under Takahashi Dohachi from the age of 13, before establishing his own studio in 1883, establishing the name on a grand scale. He was a feature in the literati community of Kyoto and was well known also as a painter, poet and calligraphist.

An elegant rendition of the famous Rimpa Crane standing alongside a swirling river of silver created by Shoun for the Shobido Art Studio enclosed in the original wooden box. Extremely well crafted, the creature stands 11 inches (25 cm) tall and is signed Shoun Saku. The black lacquered table is 18 x 13 inches (45 x 33 cm) and is in fine condition.
Shobido has been commissioning works with first rate artists and craftsmen for its own facilities and top Department stores since 1900. Founded by Eto Eikichiro at the height of the salon era, it served as a focal point for art, and they scoured the country for artists and craftsmen in all fields. During the strict war years their business suffered under the laws against excess, and finally the studio was completely destroyed in the bombing of Osaka in 1945. The second generation took over in 1946, working to re-establish the company and connecting with Hanshin Department Store, slowly growing while promoting the cultural heritage of Japan. They are now in the 113th year.

Birds chatter, perhaps excited by the promise of Spring from the plum blossoms peeking out of a bamboo grove, winters snow melts and trickles through the stones in the stream belwo. A two panel screen, ink and light color on gold by Mizuta Chikuho (1883-1958). An excellent example of this artists Nanga style, the subject and rich wet lines of the bamboo crisp and direct, fading to washes of gray in the shadows. The screen measures 68 x 68 inches (172 x 173 cm) and is in fine condition.
Mizuta Chikuho was an Osaka Nanga artist trained under Himejima Chikugai, a Nihon Nangain member often displayed at the Nitten and, in fact, bestowed with the honor of judge for the prestigious event in his later years. Works by the artist are held in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Kyoto Municipal Art Museum among many others.

A fox and cubs under the crescent moon and falling leaves by Hotta Shuso (b. 1894) in a style representative of the Taisho era. Light color on silk in a pale green silk border with bone rollers. The scroll is 21-1/2 x 86 inches (55 x 219 cm) and in fine condition but for a faint discoloration in border top and bottom.
Hotta Shuso (1894-1954) was born in Nagano prefecture and studied under Ikegami Shuho, settling in Tokyo. One of his best students, Shuso later became leader of Shuho's Denshindo atelier. He was displayed at the Teiten/Nitten National Exhibtions beginning in 1924. He was most remembered for his detailed images of animals and flowers..

A very rare 19th century elaborate head dress (Kanmuri or crown) of gilded parts inset with glass surmounted by a phoenix flanked by two dragons for use in the Japanese Noh Theater. A golden phoenix takes flight from the peak, surrounded by sun, moon and flaming jewel from which are suspended extravagant chains of glass and coral beads and gilded ornaments. Made of brass, paper, wood and thin wire, the entire is covered in gold with the sun and moon in enamel and burning jewels in glass. On the stand it is roughly 2 feet (58 cm) tall. Overall it is in very nice condition, enclosed in a beautiful 19th century wood box with brass hardware titled Tenkan (heavenly crown). This is the Tenkan which inspires the drama “Hagoromo” or The Feather Mantle.

A humorous looking dragon twists up the paper canvas, eyes on the prize, a tama or Buddhist jewel underlying a dramatically written inscription. What is extraordinary is that the dragons scaled body is performed with a single stroke of the brush! Over this has been added a shadow for the back, and embellishment of the head. It is signed Fujiki Shuchokusai, and comes enclosed in the original signed and age darkened wooden box. Bordered with patterned green silk extended with beige and featuring black lacquered wooden rollers, the scroll is 17-1/2 by 72-1/2 inches (44 x 185 cm) and is in fine condition.

A haunting vessel by Miyagawa Kozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Haku Korai Bin, Yukan Tsuki (White Korean form with free handles). This piece is the epitome of the elegance which came from Japanese working with traditional forms. Devoid of decoration, the shape stands alone among works by this famous artist. It is 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) tall and is in perfect condition. I will enclose a rosewood stand for display purposes with this vase.
The name Kozan was granted by Prince Yasui-no-Miya in 1851 in honor of the tea ware produced during the later Edo for the imperial Court by the tenth generation head of the Kyoto pottery family Miyagawa Chozo. The Kozan (Makuzu) kiln as we know it today was established in Yokohama in 1871 by the 11th generation head of the family where he reinvented the family business. He immediately set out on a journey which would propel the Kozan name to International Celebrity status, and send his wares throughout the globe. Pieces produced there were marked Kozan, or Makuzu, the official kiln-name, or both. The first son, Hanzan, succeeded as head of the kiln, in 1912, with the father officially retiring to spend more time on his own research and art. Kozan I dies in 1916. The kiln was run by Hanzan through the early Showa era, he officially taking the name Kozan II in 1917, after one year mourning for his fathers passing. Under Hanzan the kiln was commissioned for works to be presented to the Prince of Wales, the 25th wedding anniversary gift for the Taisho emperor and the Showa Emperors coronation gift. The 1000th piece to be loaded in the catalog! Offered is an 2 18th century (Edo period) Japanese Kano School 6 panel seasonal screen of pigment and applied gold on paper. Egrets gather about a snow laden willow along a stream, flowers blossioming under the snow indicative of the strength and endurance of nature. Clouds of applied gold leaf fill the scene, with open areas covered in a sprinkling of powdered gold mixed with tiny gold squares. Truly fine detail. The painting is bordered in dark blue cloth woven with large dragon dials in silver thread and features a black lacquered wooden frame. The frame is fixed with decorative plates featuring 2 Mon (family crests) and the nail covers are in the shape of the crest of the Tokugawa Shogun. The backing paper dates to the early 20th century (Meiji/Taisho period) and is in good condition except for some abrasions on the outside two panels typical of age. The largest piece I have ever seen by Miyanaga Tozan I, a fine baluster form celadon on a superb rosewood stand. It is 21-1/2 inches (55 cm) tall, 15-1/2 inches (40 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. There is a custom made copper insert for use with flower arranging. Due to size the cost of shipping will be accrued separately. Miyanaga Tozan I (1868-1941) is one of the most important names in Kyoto ceramics. He was born in Ishikawa prefecture, and graduated from the (now) Tokyo University of Art. While a government employee, he represented Japan at Arts Expositions, and studied art in Europe before returning to Japan in 1902 to devote himself to the production of ceramics, with great emphasis on celadon, one of the most difficult of all ceramic wares. He was direct teacher or mentor to a number of prominent artists including Kitaoji Rosanjin and Arakawa Toyozo. His kiln is now in the third generation, run by his grandson.

Autumn in the Mountains by Shirakura Niho Pigment on silk in a fine brocade border extended with beige and featuring ivory rollers enclosed in the original signed double wood box (nijubako). It is 26 x 56 inches (66 x 143 cm) and is in excellent condition. This is signed with his later art name Kanyu. We can see in the style as well, here he has adopted a very western watercolor approach, that this is one of his post-war works.
Shirakura Kinichiro (Niho or Jiho, Kanyu, 1896-1974) was born in Niigata, and initially was inducted into Nanga under Hatta Goro. Moving to Tokyo he began studies of Western oil painting following Ishii Hakutei. However, that was unfulfilling, and he soon moved to Kyoto, returning to the Nanga style under Tanabe Chikuson (also Tajika/Tachika Chikuson, 1864-1922). Following the death of Chikuson, he moved to Tokyo where he took up residence in the studio of Komura Suiun. He was consistently displayed at both the Teiten-Nitten National Exhibitions as well as the Nihon Nanga –In Ten. Like other individualistic artists of his generation, he was known for his very unique and easily discernible style and enjoyed immense popularity. He later changed his name to Kanyu. He was recognized in an English book published in 1958 as one of the most important artists to visit when in Japan.

A six panel gold screen decorated in a style harkening to the first half of the Edo featuring angular trees interspersed with blossoming cherries, a torrent splashing angrily through the right quarter topped with moriage gold clouds. Many repairs and losses to the heavy pigments attest to the great age of the painting. Excellent size for wall mounting, it is 62 x 138 inches (157.5 x 350 cm). The border is from a later mounting.
