A 16th -17th century Momoyama to Early Edo) Lacquered set of stacking boxes decorated with susuki (Pampas grass) blowing in the cold late autumn wind; inlayed balls of oxidized silver intimating early snow fall. The interior is festive red, while the outside is Ro-iro polished black with gold powdered designs. All the corners are sculpted and covered in powdered silver with scrolling vines in gold. Each box has its own feet, which interlock with the box above and below. On the lid a cluster of rocks in Taka-maki-e rise in silver and gold from a garen floor. The set is 38 x 27 x 22 cm (15 x 11 x 8-1/2 inches) and is in overall fine condition considering the great age (400 years) and use. It comes in a period red lacquered wooden box with some damage due to the great age.
