Deer in raised gold and mother of pearl gather about a flowing stream under bold maple on the mirror black surface of this Suzuri Bako Writing box enclosed in the original 19th c. black lacquered wooden storage case. The maple tree itself is a trunk of lead with leaves in gold, mother of pearl and lead. Inside the lid plum blossoms reach for the early spring sun over a roof of beaten lead. It retains the original Suzuri ink stone and water dropper set onto a raft structure decorated with pine boughs. The box is 21 x 24 x 4.5 cm (8 x 9-1/2 x 2 inches) and is in overall excellent condition.
