An exceptionally rare roof ornament in the shape of a devils head (called an Oni Kawara or Oni-gawara) bleached white and washed smooth with centuries of weather. Both cheeks and temples are marked by rust where hand forged iron spikes had secured it to the ridge. It is 70 cm (28 inches) tall, 55 cm (22 inches) wide and in overall excellent condition. This was likely part of a multi-layered shrine roof, the use of wood indicating it came from a lower tier which was partly protected by another overhang.
