A voluminous double gourd by Myodo Sosen with calligraphy by Chuho Sou espousing the magical Sentan, key to eternal life. The poem is Muze Jo Sentan. If you drink the mythical concoction Sentan you will never age or die and will become one with the sennin (saints). Perhaps the artist is equating Buddhist knowledge to the Sentan, allowing one to break the cycle of rebirth and death to become one with the universe. Ink on paper in an antique silk border with lacquered wooden rollers enclosed in a period kiri-wood box. The scroll is 12 x 71 inches (30 x 182 cm) and in overall excellent condition.
Chuho So-u (1759-1838) was a Buddhist priest born in Kyoto who served as 418th abbot of the Daitokuji Temple Complex, home to the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
Myodo Sosen (1768-1837) was a Buddhist priest born in Tamba who studied painting under Morikawa Sobun and served as the 429th head abbot of the Daitokuji temple complex.
