Antique Lacquer Writing Box with Mythical Shishi Lions
Please refer to our stock # MOR8043 when inquiring.
Two ferocious Shishi Lions in taka-maki-e prowl across the powdered gold ground on this Suzuri-bako writing box dating from the 19th century. Very unusual, they have glass eyes embedded into the lacquered wood surface. The hair rises in thick dark coils around the golden bodies, and the distance is polished black. Within a wandering saint leans against his staff wrapped in silver robes in togidashi-maki-e with a golden bundle at his feet. The box is 23 x 25.5 x 5 cm (9 x 10 x 2 inches). It is exactly as found, with no cleaning or restoration yet performed. There is a chip in the edge of the bottom, a scratch near the darker lion’s face, and some dings inside where the contents struck the inside of the lid likely while being carried around. Wear to the bottom consistent with age and use.
