A wood body covered in black with sumptuous maki-e of swirling water and late Spring early summer leaves under a tokkin gilded metal lid pierced with flowers dating from the 18th to early 19th century enclosed in a later black lacquered wooden box. It features a brass liner to protect the wood from heat and wear. The censer is 11.4 cm (4-1/2 inches) diameter and in overall fine condition, with some wear to the base consistent with age and use.
