Autumn Rain drifts through red fall colors on this elegant scene by influential artist Hayashi Bunto enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shu-u (Autumn Rain). Pigment and gold on silk with cloth border and bone rollers. When caught in the rigight light, the gold used gleams on the changing leaves. The scroll is 15-1/2 x 78 inches (39 x 197 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Hayashi Bunto (1882-1966) was born in Kyoto. He studied under Maekawa Bunrei (1837-1917) and later Yamamoto Shunkyo (1871-1933). He exhibited with the state controlled national Bunten organization from 1914, to 1918. When control of the organization went to the Imperial Household in 1919, a revolutionary faction of artists led by Bunto, Iguchi Kashu and Ikeda Keisen established the Independent Painting Group (Nihon Jiyu Gadan) with the premise that art should not be controlled, judged or censored by ruling bodies. The Jiyu Gadan still exists today over 100 years later, and still holds annual exhibitions.
