Antique Japanese Equestrian Makimono Handscroll, Horse tack

A selection of various horse trappings is depicted on this long Edo period hand scroll bound with dark brocade with gold piping and bone rollers. The opening is simply titled Japanese style Saddle, fittings and tack (Wa-Kura Tsuke Ginmen Gyoyo O-Fukuro Nado). The next is titled Woman’s Saddle (Onna-kura) and so on for 10 different sets of trappings. Each unique horse is depicted in various traditional garb, with rudimentary labels on some of the parts. Ink and light color on paper, The scroll is 32 x 456 cm (12-1/2 x 179-1/2 inches). It has been completely remounted, retaining the original outer cloth and bone rollers, with new cloth on the inside.
