Beautiful Zohiko Lacquer Box, Plovers and Waves

Plovers soar over deftly brushed rolling waves on this exquisite lacquer box from the preeminent lacquer studio in Kyoto Heian Zohiko, enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Inside the lid is covered in powdered silver with additional birds in gold. It is 20 x 20 x 12 cm (8 x 8 x 4-1/2 inches) and is in overall excellent condition. Zohiko is one of the oldest and most prominent lacquer studios in Kyoto founded in the early 18th century. This was made under the visage of the 7th or 8th head of the Zohiko family, in the early 20th century.
