Antique Japanese Carved Lacquer Box
Please refer to our stock # MOR7906 when inquiring.
Ripe red berries are set like rubies among the verdant green foliage opening across the orange-peeled surface of this lacquer writing box enclosed in the original artist signed wooden box dating from the pre to early post-war years. It is 20 x 24 x 5 cm (8 x 10 x 2 inches). The lacquer is in excellent condition. There is a slight bow to the lid. Signed on bottom and inside the box lid Tamehiko. Color and design, it appears to be in the Sanuki carved lacquer tradition from the Island of Shikoku. Lacquer from this regions is finally receiving some much deserved recognition with the recent appointment of Living National Treasure Status to Otani Hayato.
