A very rare Tortoise Shell Glazed bowl from the Hirasa area of Satsuma which appears to date from the Bakumatsu era in the mid to later 19th century (Late Edo to early Meiji period). It is 12.3 cm (5 inches) diameter, 8.5 cm (3-1/2 inches) tall. It comes wrapped in a conventional silk pouch in a kiri-wood collectors box titled Sansai Chawan. Hirasa is said to have begun in 1786 as the personal kiln of the Hongo Clan, Lords of Satsuma, the southernmost kingdom on the south island of Kyushu.
