A pair of comb textured black lacquered boxes covered in autumn leaves by Misago Ryosai enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuro Uchi-shu Bento (Black and Red Lunch Box). Outside the leaves vary from green to silver to gold to various shades of red. Inside is simply comb textured red. The base is smooth polished black, both boxes signed Ryo. Stored one inside the other, the larger box is 15.5 x 12 x 6.5 cm (6 x 4-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches), and both come wrapped in the original silk cloths.
Misago Ryosai (1887-1975) was born in Osaka, and initially studied painting under Morizumi Tsurana and Morizumi Chikana in Osaka. In 1901 he moved to study lacquer arts under Fujihara Shingetsu. He was favored by the industrialist Kobayashi Ichizo (Head of the Hankyu Group, 1873-1957) and was held in great favor by the tea master Yukosai (1889-1953).
