Tsuji Hokuyousai Carved Sanuki Lacquer Tray, Wine
Please refer to our stock # MOR6898 when inquiring.
Layers of colored lacquer have been carved through revealing an image of grapes and wine by Sanuki artist Tsuji Hokuyosai II (also Hokuyousai) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seibutsu no zu Choshi Shokubon (Decorative Carved Lacquer Tray of Still Life). The rim has been polished down revealing the multiple layers of color which underlay the burgundy surface, while the back is lacquered simple black. It is 30 cm (12 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
The Tsuji family tradition spans four generations. The first generation（1878-1932）moved from the lacquer producing region of Uwajima to Takamatsu where he entered the world of lacquer carving in the Sanuki tradition. The second generation (b. 1909) was trained under his father and exhibited with the Nitten immediately before and following the Pacific War as well as with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition. The third generation took the name Shoji, and the current fourth generation Hiroshi.
