| A bowl of celebration by the former Abbot of Daitokuji Temple Sohan Gempo (Shoun) enclosed in an old wooden box. According to the former owner, this bowl was created in Taisho 4 (1915) by the potter Seizan, with calligraphy and decoration performed by Shoun to commemorate appointment of rank by the Taisho Emperor. Outside is written, (In large characters) Banzai!, (Horizontal) GoDaiTen, and (vertical) Murasakino followed by the priests Ka-O signature. Inside is a floral scrawl depicting a chrysanthemum (symbol of Imperial power). The bowl measures 11 cm (4-1/2 inches) diameter, 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall. There is one minor nick in the foot (see photos), otherwise is in perfect condition. Sohan Gempo, (Shoun 1848-1922) was born into a Shinto family, however entered the Buddhist priesthood at the age of 12 at Kogen-ji, Kanazawa. After a brief period at Empukuji in Kyoto, he moved to Yokohama and received inka from Nakahara Nantenbo. It was in 1898 that he would be asked to take over the training facility at Empukuji. After a brief sojourn in China he came back to Japan and was appointed abbot of Daitokuji, one of Kyotos most important Zen temples, where he stayed until his death in 1922.
