Ancient Japanese Bizen Pottery Bowl
A smattering of goma ash surrounds but is almost worn from the top of this ancient Bizen footed bowl. A pale gray is visible below the surface, as if looking through the outer red. The bowl is heavily worn outside from much handling, and was likely used on a daily basis. Certainly 17th century, very likely Momoyama, before styles and shapes became fixed under the rigid Edo structure, I have not seen another like it. Judging by the shape it is possibly a priests begging bowl, although unusual with a foot. The bowl is 6-1/4 inches (16 cm) diameter, 5 inches (12.5 cm) tall and in overall good condition. There is a very old and worn chip in the foot. This is from a collection of scholar items we are currently offering from the estate of a Kyoto family involved in literati and art movements from the later Edo period on.
