| A Gohon Ido-Chawan by Hara Kiyokazu (Seiwa) with two character inscription ZenMi (A Taste of Zen) by Seki Bokuo (1903-1991), longtime head of Tenryuji Temple, enclosed in the original wooden box signed by both the artist and the Monk. The fawn speckled bowl is an exemplary Gohon bowl, with the pale spots each ringed in thin red giving way to the overall gray. The bowl is 5 inches (12.5 cm) diameter, 3 inches (8 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Seki Bokuo was born in Gunma prefecture and studied at the Keio university medical course before taking up formal Zen training. He became Dharma-Heir of Seki Seisetsu. He spent many years as Zen master and abbot of the Rinzai Zen Temple Tenryu-ji in Kyoto. He is well known for the numerous books on different aspects of Zen training written over his near half century at Tenryuji, and was a talented Zen artist. An important and influential Zen figure helping to spread understanding through the tumultuous 20th century. | |||||||||
