| A six line poem brushed in bold dark strokes, brushwork befitting the former Samurai commander of Choshu forces during the Boshin War Higashikuze Michitomi (during the Meiji restoration). It appears to be titled “Song of the Kamo River (Kamo Gawa Shi)”. Tsuki ue Kamo () hashi, Shin nagare tane () asai, Mizu ichi kawa aki so-so… (Moon above the bridge, Fresh water flowing shallow…) It is performed with ink on satin and signed Chikutei. Bordered in rough beige cloth and featuring bone rollers, the scroll is 20-1/2 x 40 Inches (51.5 x 102 cm) and in fine condition. Chikutei (1832-1912) was born into the Kuga clan, and became active during the Meiji restoration as a fighter for the Choshu fief. He left Kyoto for Choshu in 1863, and joined the fight there as a high level member of the Eastern Forces (Seitogun). He held many important posts and fought in the Boshin war of 1868-1869. After the wars he was appointed to the Governmental Ministry of Foreign Affairs. | ||||||
