Antique Japanese Ko-Bizen Kakehana Hanging Wall Vase
An Edo period Kakehana Bizen wall sconce covered in black charring and goma ash deposits. From these blackened fields run rivers of dark green over the glassy shizen-yu ash glaze. The back is barren red clay, giving multiple facets to the piece, a pleasure to view and hold. There is a kiln stamp impressed into one side. From the back is seen a rich red brass ring for hanging. It is 5 inches (12 cm) long and in excellent condtion, enclosed in an antique wooden box titled Ko-Bizen Kakehana. Bizen is one of the odest ceramic sites in Japan, with one of the proudest traditions, and many purists consider it to be THE ceramic which represents the nation’s aesthetic best. It would be stunninghanging at the entrance to a tea house, with a single flower falling from the dark openning.
