Meiji Japanese Exhibition Scroll, Lion by Okamoto Hosui
A lion pads onto the silk canvas of this Meiji period watercolor and pigment painting by Okamoto Hosui dated 1901. The scene is wrapped in a gray satin border patterned with florals and geometric dials, enhancing the exotic imagery. It is 39-1/2 x 80 inches (100.5 x 203 cm) and in fine condition. Judging by the unusual size and genre, it is likely an exhibition work from that period. Okamoto Hosui (Fujitaro) was born in Nara in 1879. He studied painting under Hirai Chokusui, and later Kikuchi Hobun, from whom he received his name and settled in Kyoto, then the artistic capitol of Japan.
