Huge Japanese Exhibition Scroll, Horse by Matsui Reiko
A horse, saddled with the traditional wooden Kura, muzzles the ground in this large early Showa Nihonga work by Matsui Reiko. Bordered in fine silk patterned typical of the 1920s, this is likely an exhibition work. 52 x 92 inches (132 x 234 cm) Minor losses to gray of rope, scratches under pine branch, cracks in heavy pigment of horses neck. As can be seen here, very presentable. Matsui Reiko, born 1903 in Kagoshima and graduated the Natioanl Academy of Fine Arts, subsequently becoming a student of Araki Juho. Exhibited and prized at a number of National Exhibitions. It comes in a wooden box.
