Antique Japanese Skull Painting by Tanomura Chokunyu
A simple Zen style painting of a skull abandoned to weeds signed Chokunyu (Tanomura Chokunyu, 1814-1907). The lonely image may be a future self portrait by a man who knew his time was ending, the painting signed A 90 Year Old Man Sanomiya Chokunyu. It has been freshly bordered in dark brocade embellished with crawling vines, suiting the painted scene, and features dark wood rollers. The scroll is 17 x 75 inches (43 x 190 cm) and is in fine, restored condition. Tanomura Chokunyu was born in Kyushu, and had the good fortune of a father serving the same lord as the great Tanomura Chikuden, one of the most influential 19th century Nanga artists. He apprenticed to Chikuden, eventually adopted as his heir. He was one of the founding members of the Kyoto school of Art and its first director, which held tremendous influence in the early 20th century. He was well versed in Chinese poetry and known for his skill with themes reflecting that genre. Works by this prolific artist are held in numerous collections, including the British Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Art, Ashmolean Museum, as well as Tokyo and Kyoto National Museums among many others.
