Antique Japanese Edo period Landscape Screen Set B
Travelers wander through a chimerical lake-side landscape of fantastic rock formations dotted with temples; one of a pair of full sized Edo period Kano screens, gold dust and ink on paper, in excellent restored condition. Powdered gold has been lightly rubbed into the surface, burnished, subtly enhancing the scene without the audacity of overt gold foil. Likely an image of the Western Lake genre of Chinese lore, all is deftly brushed in soft tones befitting the early/mid Edo period. The scene is bordered in patterned blue silk with a pale kinran gold threaded ko-beri wrapped in a black lacquered wooden frame secured with plum-blossom shaped brass nail covers and etched hardware. Each is 67-1/2 by 148 inches (171 x 376cm) and underwent a high quality restoration sometime in the distant past. Since only minor surface insect damage.
