Antique Japanese Edo period Landscape Screen Set B
Travelers wander through a blanketed lake-side landscape of hills and low mountains, a village sheltered in the lee of a bold rock formation; One fellow stokes his hearth, red flame glowing softly in the open room promising warmth and shelter. The scene is quiet, one can almost hear the muted sigh of snow on the overburdened bamboo. A dog perks up to the approaching sound of a mule as he sluffs through the drifts. All else lies silent awaiting the thaw of Spring. This is one of a pair of full sized Edo period screens being offered, gold dust and ink on paper, in excellent restored condition. Powdered gold has been lightly rubbed into the surface, burnished, subtly enhancing the scene without the audacity of overt gold foil. All is deftly brushed in soft washes befitting the early/mid Edo period. The scene is bordered in patterned blue silk with a pale kinran gold threaded ko-beri wrapped in a black lacquered wooden frame secured with plum-blossom shaped brass nail covers and etched hardware. Each is 67-1/2 by 148 inches (171 x 376cm) and underwent a high quality restoration sometime in the distant past.
