Japanese Daruma Scroll by the Hermit/Priest Itten Tokai
A four line inscription shades the bald pate of a sullen Daruma figure by Itten Tokai, the powerful sweep of a brush clothing him in dark ink. The peevish figure is soft against the grayed paper, reminiscent of much older Daruma imagery. It is bordered in copper green patterned brocade in the popular Mincho style of the Meiji era. The scroll measures 20 x 65 inches (51 x 165 cm) and in fine condition. Little is recorded about the recluse Itten Tokai other than he was a Soto Zen priest holed up in the far Northern province of Hokkaido. His Daruma paintings are impressive, with bold lines defining the wispy character. Like many Soto Zen artists before him, who tended to live quietly in remote areas; from Fugai on to the present, there is almost no biographical information available but the Zenga they produced are outstanding.
