2 Antique Japanese Articulated Silver Crabs
A superb pair of hand-crafted articulated silver crabs clamber about an igneous rosewood burl carved with a crab and frogs signed Kakuho(›…•õ) set on a black lacquered wooden display stand. Each crab is intricately formed from silver with shakudo eyes, each joint of every leg and claw fully mobile. The shells are realistically patterned with hand formed indentations and textures. The crabs are roughly 2 to 2-1/2 inches wide as displayed. The Burl of wood is carved on front with a crab climbing up the side, looking cautiously at 2 frogs resting quietly in crevices in the wood. The burl is roughly 7-1/2 inches tall, the same width signed on the base Kakuho-koku. Not likely originally a set, they came to us as is and we will pass it on as such as they are quite an interesting match. The crabs are enclosed in a red lacquered wooden box, the carving in a kiri-wood box. Likely dating from the opening years of the 20th century.
