Edo p. Japanese Buddhist Scroll
A large Mandala image depicting in vivid detail a plethora of deities surrounding a central seated Amidha figure dating from the later Edo period titled Hanjaku Juroku Zen-Shin (The Sixteen Gods of (greater and lesser vehicle)Zen Buddhism). Eleven holy figures stand on either side of Amiddha, Guardian Deities, Vengeful Kings and Saints. Even the background is filled, the figures standing on a tiled floor, all else hemmed in by white clouds. The detail is astonishing, incredibly fine brushwork and intricate detail in vibrant color. Certainly one of the better images we have come across. The pigment on silk image is bordered in original Edo period kinran green silk laced with gold designs inside red kinran with etched brass rollers and hardware. It is 3 feet by 77 inches (90 by 196 cm) and in fine condition. It comes in a Niju Bako (new Kiri-wood box inside a red lacquered outer box).
