| Two mandarin ducks huddle on the frigid shore overhung by a single gnarled plum, the first blossoms opening to the late winter sun; a fine small six panel screen signed Ryukyo and dating to the Meiji period. The male birds eyes are nearly closed as his colorful body absorbs the suns warmth. She stands alert, ready for any coming stranger. The plum rises in faded gray with dark hollows reminiscent of older Zen imagery. Ink and light color on paper with powdered gold mist rubbed into the surface bordered in patterned silk with a black lacquered wooden frame. The screen measures 54 inches x 9 feet (136.5 x 274 cm) and is in overall fine condition with minor handling marks typical of age and faint spotting along the second hinge. | |||||||||||||||
