Antique Japanese 4 scroll set by Hayashi Bunto
Pigment on silk set of four scrolls depicting animals of the Chinese Zodiac enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Bulls recline under blossoming trees, tigers roar from a rocky crag, monkeys munch on persimmons and dragons vie for power in the stormy night sky. Each is bordered in patterned blue brocade extended with beige. The scrolls are 19 x 76-1/2 inches (48.5 x 194.cm). There is some age spotting, mostly prevalent in the monkey image, as well as water stains in the upper border and right edge of the dragon scroll and monkey scroll. Bunto (1882-1966) studied painting under Yamamoto Shunkyo, and became a preeminent Shijo school artist of the early 20th Century. Disillusioned with the Juried exhibitions, along with Kikuchi Keigetsu and Iguchi Kashu, he was one of the founding members of the Nihon Jiyu Gakkai. He is held in the collection of, among others, the Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
