Taisho Japanese Nitten Exhibition Scroll Set, Fuko
A pair of original scrolls exhibited at the 1918 Nitten National Exhibition by Ishiwata Fuko enclosed in a period wooden box. One boy throws his arms wide with a loud cry, startling swallows from a leafless tree. The younger boy looks on in amazement, mouth falling open as the birds take flight. Both children are dressed in padded kimonos, a brilliant example for its time. Faint color has been used on the birds, with a stronger color used only on the childrens exposed skin. The scrolls are 88 x 255 cm (3 feet x 8 feet 4 inches), all original ink and light color on dappled paper in a pale green patterned silk border. A few minor wrinkles and some natural toning to the paper are the only detractors. This was displayed nationally in 1918 at the 12th Bunten, and is visible in the Nittenshi Catalog V, page 290. Ishiwata Fuko (1891-1961) learned to paint under Kawai Gyokudo, rising to be an important 20th century artist. Please contact me for larger photos.
