Edo period Makimono, Scholars Rocks, Ono Unho
Perfection through contemplation of a stone…there is a lot to ponder in this makimono showing studies of stones dated 1928 and signed the old man Unho. 20 various rock clusters are depicted, from dark stone to crystals in various arrangements for the Keido practice of creating scenery. It is wrapped in green patterned silk and features bone rollers, enclosed in a signed wooden box. The scroll is 7-1/4 inches (18.5 cm) wide, and over 17-1/2 feet (5.1 meters) long, overall in fine condition. Ono Unho (1796-1856) was born into the family of a flower arranger, one of the arts closely related to Keido. He was known as one of the preeminent artists of his time. He studied painting in Kyoto, both Shijo and Nanga schools under Shibata Gitai He was later employed as a teacher to the Matsudaira Lords in Kameyama, however remained well known in Kyoto throughout his carreer, his tigers said to rival those of Kishi Ganku. It appears to have been mounted in the current form in 1928. Judging by the final inscription it appears to have been mounted in the current form in 1928. by Tanabe Hekido.
