Nara p. Japanese Suzuri Ink Stone carved from Roof Tile
A suzuri ink grinding stone, the basin sculpted from an ancient Kawara roof tile decorated with the remnants of painted vines. It is roughly 10 x 8 inches (25 x 20 cm). The roof tile is from the Nara to early Heian period. The cloth backing marks on the inside show this to be of Japanese origin.
