| A small and very rare Koro incense burner in the shape of an elephant by Kyoto artist Tanaka Ikka enclosed in the original signed wooden box. On the back of the elephant is a removable red blanket forming the lid of the incense chamber decorated with gold and silver clouds and pierced with three holes. The Koro is roughly 7 inches (17.5 cm) long, signed on the belly and dated 1904. The last two photos show what appears to be a pre-finishing ship in the lid which was repaired before the final painting was completed. Tanaka Ikka (1864-1924) was a prominent Nihonga artist born in Kyoto who studied under Kubota Beisen. In 1884 at the young age of 20 his painting; accepted into the 2nd National Exhibition (2nd Naikoku E-ga Kyotsukai), was purchased by the Imperial Household Agency, instantly recognizing his genius. | |||||||||||||
