Antique Carved Bamboo & Doe-Skin Buddhist Gong Striker
An antique Dora (gong) striker wrapped in deer skin with an elegant and expertly carved bamboo handle. The bamboo is deeply incised with stamps and signatures in a running sosho script. Among others, names on the handle read Ogon, Hobutsu and Sekko. Although found in Japan, it is possibly, like many revered ritual instruments, originally of Chinese origin. The striker is over 12 inches (31 cm) long and in excellent condition. We have had the dried and cracked doeskin professionally replaced and worn padding re-wrapped so that it is ready for use. The Dora is a ritualistic instrument used in some form in most Asian countries. Its Relationship with Buddhism is deep and is also associated with the Zen Tea ceremony where it is used to announce the arrival of guests.
