Antique Japanese Chashitsu Tea Room Sign
An unusual sign cut from a plank of worm eaten wood inlayed with two ceramic characters reading Whispering Pines. The fresh green glaze intimates the evergreen branches of the pine against the dark shadows of bark and forest. From right to left, it reads Sho-Sei. It would be an excellent addition to a Northern Tea Room… The sign is roughly 15-1/2 by 8 by 1 inches 40 x 21 x 2.5 cm) and is in perfectly displayable antique condition. The character Sho appears to have been repaired twice, top and bottom of the left vertical, and the character Sei has been repaired on the lower most extension and the top left. It likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, and was removed from an old Kyoto residence. The hand formed and fired characters are likely from teh Seto region.
