| Stylized waves undulate about the shoulder of this rare 18th century Ao-Bizen (Blue Bizen) tsubo storage urn marked with pale color. The piece has magnificent keshiki (scenery), with a shi-seki in the side, a large divot elsewhere, pale licks of soft brown hi-iro and three tiny finger marks appear to be that of a child. The piece was made in the coil method, with a flat base attached to coils of clay rising up and smoothed. The base is quite worn, with the remainder of the support marks still visible. It was acquired from a local Kyoto household. The tsubo is 12 inches (30 cm) tall, roughly 10 inches (26 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. The minor nick in the rim appears to be pre-firing. Opposing oblong patches of roughened clay are testament to where the thrower picked the still wet clay up and set it out to dry. Ao-Bizen had a brief period of manufacture, being mainly produced in the mid 18th century, and then forgotten for over a hundred years, to be revived in the Meiji period. | |||||||||||||||
