Meiji p. Japanese Carving of a Bunraku Reader (Gidaiyu)
An incredibly realistic image of a gidaiyu gripping the sides of his book stand as he rises up to let fly a great bellow. Glass eyes and thick colored gofun are reminiscent of the iki-ningyo (living dolls) of the period. The figure is 57 cm (23 inches) tall, and requires a display space 40 x 55 cm (16 x 22 inches). There is some minor damage (chips in the gofun covering), on the tips of his shoulder wings, top of his chonmage topknot, and the left hand has been re-carved, but very well done; it remains raw wood. There is also a chip to the tassel on the table. It comes in a period wooden storage box. As might be expected of this type of craft for the time, it is unsigned.
