Edo p. Japanese Samurai Battle Screen Set, Left
A set of 18th century battle screens depicting scenes from the Heike wars in the 11th century. The war starts in the upper left with the battle at Gojo bridge, and culminates in the center of the second screen with the battle for Ichinotani. Throughout we see images of the Hero, Minomoto Yoshitsune and his band of riders. The screens appear to have been remounted at some time in the Meiji. The backing is in excellent condition. Fine detail in a style consistent with the period. The screen measures 68-1/2 by 146-1/2 inches 174 x 372 cm. There is water staining, toning and abrasions typical of age, and the screens exude a great sense of antiquity.
