Fine Japanese Koi Screen, Carp & Cherry Blossoms, Choko
Cherry blossoms shadow a fresh swirling pond fostering colorful koi swishing lazily about in the soft current. An endearing image for anyone who has visited Japan in the Spring. The image is performed with soft pigment on paper. It is bordered in gold on cream brocade with a black lacquered wooden frame and fine brass hardware, retaining the original patterned backing paper. All is in excellent condition. The screen measures 4 feet 6 inches by 9 feet (137 x 272 cm), an excellent size for wall hanging. Matsumoto Choko (b. 1902) was best known for his images of Carp, and was one of Japans top artists for the genre. He studied painting under the avant-garde Tsuchida Bakusen and was regularly exhibited throughout Japan.
