Antique Japanese Mingei Kamahen Karatsu Vase
A small tokkuri has melted into the side of this large antique Chossen Karatsu Vase , a kiln miss-fire. Raw dark earth supplanted by rivulets of dark ame-yu glaze frosted above with crackled green tinged white. A very unusual piece, as ordinarily mistakes were destroyed. Was it done purposely or testament to the violence within the kiln, where 40 percent loss is standard? An example of rare chance or musakui no sakui, the aesthetic of intention of no intent; we will never know, however it clearly shows the respect placed on chance in the orient. It is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall, and in excellent condition.
