| A beauty peaks out from a shuttered house at the moonlit river; an engaging scene by Yasuda Hanpo enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Here the artists has created a strong sense of moonlight, giving us only reflective surfaces and shadow. The unique style is typical of Hanpo, who was known, along with some of his contemporaries, Shirakura Niho and Fukuda kodojin, for their highly stylistic and original portrayals. The ink on silk scene is bordered in ripple patterned green silk and ends with huge ivory rollers. The scroll is 26-1/2 inches by 6 feet (67 x 184 cm). There are a few scattered marks, but is overall in excellent condition. Yasuda Hanpo (1889-1947), originally of Niigata, studied the Nanga style under Himejima Chikugai, living and working in Osaka. He was a consistent exhibitor and awarded on several occasions in the Bunten, Teiten and Nitten National Exhibitions. His works are held in the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. | ||||||||||
