| The Mountain Sleeps in Twilight, Ink on silk by Murakami Randen, (b. 1900) dated 1923. This is far from the standard Nanga image, with all lines thoroughly washed creating the soft sense of pre-dawn, when outline and shadow seem to blend. The only color pale green and tan drawing our attention to the single man walking toward the collection of simple huts. The painting is set in a field of patterned green brocade; the scroll measuring 18-3/4 by 75-1/2 inches (48 x 192 cm). Murakami, originally from Hiroshima, lived in Kyoto and studied painting under Mizuta Chikuho. | |||||||
