Fine Early 20th Century Japanese Maki-e Lacquer Tray
Palm fronds explode in a mishmash of gold across this fine black lacquered wooden tray enclosed in a custom made period wooden box. The artist has used various shades of gold to affect distance and shadow, with the majority in takamaki-e, the furthest most branches in togidashi of fine gold powder. The ro-iro ground is scattered with clouds of gold flake, with the upturned rim lined with a genuine silver band. The tray is 12 x 8-1/4 inches (21 x 30 cm) and is in fine condition, with some minor scratching on the underside typical of use.
