Antique Japanese Bronze Buddhist Temple Toro Lantern
A large detailed Meiji period bronze ishi-toro garden lantern style lantern from a Buddhist temple. Etched about one tier above the base are seven names, likely the names of those whose donations bought the lantern over a century ago. It comes apart into 4 separate interlocking pieces. It is solid bronze but for 6 flat head screws holding on the elephant head decorations to the top. About the base fly three dimensional plovers (chidori) over waves. The door is fully functional, the light chamber enclosed with paulownia crest designs. It is a much heavier casting than is normally seen, with more detail in the reliefs. The lantern is just over three feet (94 cm) tall and in excellent condition, weighing roughly 32 pounds (15 kg). It was used inside the temple as an altar lamp.
