Edo Period Japanese Karatsu Chawan tea bowl
A Yobitsugi chawan made up of three shards from Edo period Karatsu tea bowls. The tradition of making Yobitsugi chawan dates back to the late Edo period. Traditionally imperfect pieces were smashed when removed from the kiln, and at one point it became fashionable to reassemble the recovered pieces into a new bowl. This particular bowl is quite fine, with the three pieces bound together with a gray lacquer mixture, one side slightly flat, with a large bubble swelling inside the cup, lending character to the bowl. It measures 2-1/2 inches (6.5cm) tall, 4-1/4 inches (10.5cm) in diameter.
